“Breathtaking”
Reviewed 10 August 2017 for a stay in July 2017

First, the views. I don't see how they can be beat. The deck/pool area was my favorite spot. The house was nice and had many extras like beach towels, beach chairs, and noodle floats for the pool. Also had snorkel, mask, and flippers, but we used our own mask and snorkel that we brought with us. Their flippers and chairs really helped out. Kitchen had everything that we needed. Outdoor showers were kinda of fun. Had one problem with the water but Jay was up in less than 10 minutes and had it resolved. I enjoyed the peacefulness of Points of View. The drive was a little bit further out but worth it. Athena was easy to work with and made me feel comfortable about picking Points of View over other properties.

Management Response

I am so very glad to hear that you enjoyed Points of View, my very much loved St. John home. Aren't Athena and Jay wonderful? I began coming to St. John in 1969 and discovered the East End in 1975. I understand fully the lure of the sensational views and the peacefulness -- and I'm so glad that your Points of View time was special. Come again! Sally, the owner.

“Ultimate St. John Rental”

If you're still trying to decide on which island to visit, make it St. John, the only island in the Caribbean which is mostly national park. Gorgeous beaches, snorkeling, and fewer people than any other island. Plus - Points of View is a terrific rental. As I've said before, the views are spectacular, and the East End offers a choice of small, less-visited beaches. As you approach Points of View, flowers spill over the white fence and a sense of wonderful ease comes over you. The house is open, and airy, offering a variety of sleeping arrangements depending on how many are in your party. A plunge pool beckons, as does the large deck. The interior of the house features charming Caribbean colors, and the opportunity to look across Hansen Bay to Coral Bay while you cook, read or relax. Coral Bay offers a grocery and several restaurants if you don't feel like cooking. Couldn't be a better retreat from the cares of the world.

“A remarkably private home on East End of St. John”

We have been going to St. John for many years. We have stayed in Points of View for the last 4 years. It is the most relaxing, carefree, home we have ever rented on SJ. It is at the end of a private road and while there are several other homes around it, it has privacy and spectacular views of Hansen Bay . It is down the hill from Privateer Bay with excellent down island views. It has a small pool and all the amenities you could need. Barbeque, hi speed internet, great cooking area, satellite tv., etc., etc., etc. The Property Managers, Jay and Athena are awesome and very attentive. They have become our friends. We plan on returning later this year.

“Spectacular, comfortable, convenient”

It truly is hard to imagine how a vacation place could be better than this. It’s a place you’ll want to come back to, again and again. Everywhere you look, at every hour, you see gorgeous views. They’re even lovely when it rains. The setting is utterly serene, literally at the end of the road on the most natural and one of the least-populated islands in the Caribbean, and yet you can get there within two hours of landing in neighboring St. Thomas (which has very good air service). The directions might look complex at first glance but actually are very easy and straightforward to follow – we never felt confused. And the drive is beautiful, mostly through national parkland.

The hilltop site, in addition to giving wonderful views, also ensures constant breezes that greatly increase comfort both by moderating the temperatures and keeping bugs away. The house itself is sited and designed to catch the breeze, and you can always supplement the airflow with big, quiet ceiling fans in every room. There’s also air conditioning for the bedrooms, which might be nice in summer, though we never felt any urge to turn it on in February.

The house itself is bright, airy, well laid-out, and well equipped for comfort and convenience. There were a total of six of us and we never felt the least bit crowded in the three spacious bedrooms and lofty great room. We had no kids in our group but we would say that as many as four younger children could have been accommodated comfortably as well. It’s anything but spare or stark (as many other vacation homes are) filled with color and appealing art. The sturdy, comfortable furniture is all in good shape.

You can walk down to a secluded beach and other beaches are no more than five minutes away by car, all with superb swimming and snorkeling in some of the cleanest, most sparkling water on the planet. Reefs ring all the beaches. Less than half an hour away lie the renowned, magnificent beaches of the north shore, protected within the 7000+ acres of the Virgin Islands National Park. The park also offers a wide range of hiking trails.

When you get back to the house take a dip in the pool, right on the broad wraparound deck, to rinse off or just to relax in the warm afternoon sun. Then head down to the town of Coral Bay, just a few minutes away, for dinner in one of a number of restaurants. Our favorite was Reggie's Barbecue, a simple rustic stand with outdoor seating and outstanding food, cooked by one of the nicest men you’d ever meet. Or stop by Lilly’s Market, a few doors away, to pick up the makings for a simple meal at the house, which comes adequately equipped for basic cooking.

The big deck is a wonderful place to sit at night, under a brilliantly starry sky with the lights of passing ships in the distance. Or stream Netflix movies to your tablet using the house’s WiFi.

St. John is a destination not to be missed, and you won’t find a better base to experience it from. See where it is on Google Earth at 18°20'3.3"N, 64°40'29.6"W.

One tip: Don’t rent a car any bigger than you really need. The trail up to the house is very narrow and you risk scrapes or scratches with a wide vehicle. Once you’re there the house has ample off-trail parking for three cars.

Another tip: Learn to recognize Diadema antillarum, the Caribbean black sea urchin, and stay clear of them in the water. A very important and valuable creature, but not one you want to have an encounter with!

“Amazing location, decor to bring a smile, unimpeded vistas.”
Reviewed 9 February 2013 for a stay in January 2013

Points of View is aptly named. Situated high above the bays on the east end of St. John, this lovely home offers breathtaking panoramas from its huge deck and dipping pool. The sunsets are particularly spectacular. When you tear yourself away to go inside, you're greeted by cheery, colorful decor and comfy furniture where it's easy to settle in with a book or meal. With two spacious bedrooms upstairs and a separate "apartment" with a kitchenette below, POV offers great space for guests to hang out together or get away for a few private moments.

The east end of St. John is a special place; the beaches are quiet and secluded and the snorkeling is terrific. We saw rays, squid, hawksbill turtles, eels, sharks and -- of course -- countless jewel-like reef fish. The town of Coral Bay is an easy drive, where you can find provisions, restaurants, snorkeling gear and boats to rent or charter. Several of the not-to-be-missed local haunts include Skinny Legs -- a bar/restaurant with fun shops -- and the Donkey Diner, which serves a great breakfast. The barbecue at Reggie's is also a good deal. I'd recommend renting a Jeep or other rugged vehicle to traverse the hills. Once you get used to the roads, driving on the east end is a lot of fun but be careful!

It's a easy walk to nearby beaches. And a hike down the hill to the salt pond is worth the effort. There's not a single drawback to POV except when the time comes to leave.
