We had a fantastic three days celebrating a golden wedding anniversary.
All nine family members were full of praise for the location and size of the property.
We would definitely recommend it and hope to pay a return visit.
However, there were a few niggles.
The literature says there are five bathrooms. We could only find three plus a toilet!
No soap was provided and no spare toilet rolls.
A lot of the bathrooms and bedrooms did not have useable locks/bolts.
One of the underside kitchen cabinet lights came loose and gave an electric shock when it was refitted.
Just returned from a lovely break with the family staying at Skelgill Farm (Mrs Tiggy Winkles) We took our family to show them why we love the lakes so much. Our group included our grandchildren ages 2 5 9 and 12 plus Rory the dog, they loved it we even did an Easter egg hunt in the garden. The cottage had everything we needed even a welcome pack. The rooms were spacious which gave us room to move. The beds were comfy with 100% clean sheets. Every window had a view the children loved the log fire (not that we needed a fire the cottage always felt warm) and the wooded area at the back it was safe for them to play. We did some fantastic walks which included Cat Bells of course. Due to the Swinside Inn being full we had a lovely meal at The Coledale Inn Braithwaite. I would say that the pictures on TripAdvisor do not do the cottage justice. We all agreed it would be lovely to stay here again we made some love memories thanks so much.
We have stayed here 3 times, and it does suit us well. But this year it was almost twice as expensive as April last year.
And the lighting was poor and bulbs weren’t replaced, cleaners had left all equipment and extraneous items out unnecessarily, a bunch of dead daffodils was tipped out right by the front door! And the aga wasn’t hot, making the promise of a hot cozy kitchen “Luke warm”. It wasn’t hot enough to cook on so there was endless back and forth to the “tired” back kitchen, though every bit of cooking equipment was in the main kitchen.
For practically £500 a night, I think they could turn the Aga up to a working temperature. Very disappointing.
There isn’t a downstairs loo either, so our elderly parents, who were going to join the grandchildren for lunch, declined with worry. And there is space for one under the stairs.
However, The beds and bedding and towels are lovely, but it would have been nice to have soap dispensers provided, or shower gel.
In summary, it is a large spacious house which suits extended families well, but I thought the extra cost this year would have been spent on better facilities, it felt a bit tired. I love the traditional feel but heating, lighting and bathrooms are important.
Lovely situation on slope of Cat Bells hill.(two of the children ran up to summit on first evening and took beautiful photos...on their own) Family aged 9 to 78. .House has great character. ..Large rooms. Pool table very popular. Luckily we took big pans for cooking , catering for 12 a challenge ! Bed linen good . WiFi excellent. . Our considered criticisms were. A downstairs toilet would have been an improvement, as two of the bathrooms were shared by 10 people ,as the forth en suite was inaccessible. More pans would have been useful. House was clean. All things considered we all enjoyed our stay at Skelgill......plenty of walking, boating ,photography, ,cycling and Keswick near for shopping
Every year I travel away with my friends and I have to say this year was quiet possibly the best yet helped in part to this amazing location and cottage.
In total there was 6 adults and 5 children and we fit in this cottage with room to spare.
The cottage is set in a perfect location albeit slightly hard to find initially. It has 4 double rooms and 2 single which includes a bunk bed. Downstairs there is a huge lounge area, kitchen and pool room. There is sufficient equipment to satisfy all needs to a large group but my only criticism would be that maybe some of the furniture and equipment could be upgraded as it has been well used (understandably)
I would honestly highly recommend this cottage to everyone heading for the lakes as it sits in a fantastic location 10 minutes from the lake and 2 seconds from the mountains. Left in a clean and usable state with a little welcome pack of bread, eggs and milk waiting for us. My kids had a blast and I genuinely missing even though I've only been away for 8 hours.
Thank you to the owner and Lucinda who was on hand to help with my numerous emails asking daft questions before we arrived. We hope to one day return
