“Walk to Whinlatter top”

We have been coming to Whinlatter for over 25 years and every time we come there is something new, a reinvention of the trails, the cafe or the Forest Park.

We walked to Whinlatter top onwards from the waymarked forest trails on a snowy and sunny day and then headed back to the cafe for a delicious lunch. The staff were effective and very friendly and service was excellent. The cafe is clean and new with opportunties to watch the birds feeding on huge feeders from the windows or on the TV screen inside the cafe.

Unfortunately the Bassenthwaite ospreys had not quite arrived back when we visited, but nevertheless a very enjoyable visit, but watch out for the Gruffalo hidden in the trees.

We visited here with our kids to do the Highway Rat Trail and despite it raining we enjoyed it. It's only 1 mile and and you can do with or without the activity pack (£3). Parking reasonable at £2 for the first hour. Good visitor centre, shop and cafe.

We came here to mountain bike but there are plenty of walking trails here too. The car park can get very busy at peak season but the rest of the year is fine. Once out on the trails you rarely bump into anyone else as the forest is so big. The views are amazing as you gain height and the hills can be very steep in places.
