We stayed here for 4 days/3 nights and had a terrific time. Up front, we are birders and nature lovers and not out for a luxury hotel experience, which you won't find here. They are primarily devoted to rainforest research education and finance some of those efforts with tourism.

Also be aware, this is lowland rain forest so it is hot and humid, particularly hiking in the forest. That said, that's why it's such an amazing place.

We stayed in one of the "deluxe" rooms that had a/c and a ceiling fan. It didn't get quite cool enough for me but my husband is an a/c hater and he was happy. As we were leaving we finally found a setting to lower the temp setting lol. The bathroom was big and the water was hot--can't vouch for quantity as we're both water savers and don't take long shower--but it was always there when we wanted it.

Breakfast in included in the room rate, and it was different every day (with the exception of the ever present pico de gallo, of course!) and very good. The restaurant is in a pleasant open-air pavilion and the food is typical Costa Rican. The beer is cold and at dinner time you might be entertained by some bats flitting around the lights in the corner.

We truly enjoyed birding and wildlife watching here, both in the gardens around the lodge and on the beautiful suspension bridge over the Sarapiqui river. Dawn and twilight were the best times. We also took the opportunity to take some tours at the nearby OET, or La Selva Biological Station, about a twenty minutes' drive from Tirimbina (unless your taxi driver is determined to deliver you the Selva Verde Hotel, about 5 minutes from Tirimbina. We sorted it out).

The staff was friendly and helpful but there were some younger folks there (interns? students?) who weren't quite sure about how things worked.

We booked through Aratinga Tours and highly recommend both the tour company and Tirimbina lodge.

Room Tip: We stayed in a deluxe room, believe other room categories are mainly for student groups

We stayed here on a Sierra Club trip. Rooms were quaint and comfortable. Thanks goodness the air conditioning worked great. The staff was so friendly and accommodating. Rodolfo in particular explained different places to walk and went out of his way to be helpful. Everybody loved the chocolate tour. It was way better than I expected. The walk over on the suspension bridge was scary but fun. It was so long and high. Got to see some animals in the wild.

We visited Tirimbina for the Chocolate tour. Hillary was our guide and she did a wonderful explanation of the history and process of how we get Chocolate. We had many opportunities to participate in the presentation. This alone is worth the visit to Tirimbina. I loved the grounds and their gift shop had the best prices of the whole trip. Thanks for a fun and informative presentation.

We visited the lodge for the chocolate tour, we walked across the suspension bridge and through the rain forest to see how cocoa is grown and turned into chocolate.

It was an excellent tour seeing wildlife as we walked to the cocoa trees. It is magnificent to see the forest and the guide was excellent

This place was a highlight of our trip. We saw more wildlife here than anywhere else and it is not overly "touristy". Now let me say this, this place is a non-profit reserve, so the accommodations are comfortable, but the place is beautiful. As we were walking up to the place from the parking lot, one of the maintenance employees pointed out to us the monkeys in the trees. On the backside of the lodge, is a large suspension bridge that takes you across the river and into the rainforest, were there are many trails to take that you can do at your leisure or with a tour guide. During the day we walked the trails ourselves, however we did do a guided night tour, which was amazing! We saw howler monkeys, white faced monkeys, sloths, red-eyed tree frogs, and a snake. The lodge also has a small restaurant and bar that has good food. This place is perfect for someone who just wants to enjoy nature. I highly recommend it.
