When you come to Pontresina in between seasons you need a little luck because so much is shut down. Good thing for me that Hotel Steinbeck was up to the task. I was picked up by a free shuttle offered from the train station by request - uphill in the rain was my alternative. The driver handled everything right into my room. The front desk was busy but another staff quickly appeared to check me in. I chose a simpler double room for just me for a few CHF more and it was worth it. Nice modern wood furnishings. Roomy clean bathroom with a wonderful tub and HOT water to soak in after a cold wet day. The room was quiet & at night the window open was really nice. Nice bed. They are prepared to book excursions for you including the Bernina Express. Their shuttle will take you around town free. For 20 CHF they took me to either St Moritz or Samedan - in my case the Samedan train station to catch the Glacier Express. They also give you a pass to use the local public transport & mountain lifts. I used it to come back from the train station after hours - the bus brings you UP the hill for a short level walk to the hotel. You have access to a pool and spa but I didn't use it.
