Johannisberg is perched on the top of the hill looking out over the Bad Nauheim valley to the distant hills. So, a little out - and a long way up - from the town centre. But the calm, and views from the terrace, are worth it.
Although the building is old [19th century], the whole place was re-done in the 1920's/1930's in pure - and beautifully done - bauhaus style. Every fitting is absolutely in period, and of the highest quality. An architectural wet dream!
The rooms are large. Town views ''Stadtausblick'' are dearer than the forest view rooms at the back.
The restaurant is good. High quality food, including a very fine and copious breakfast. Well and attentively served. Not cheap.
Service is generally good - if slightly disorganised because the whole place is run from the kitchen 'front of house'. There is no hotel reception as such. But the maitre de/head chef/owner/manager/whatever is a real character, and very helpful.
Overall, an idiosyncratic and very well worthwhile experience!More
