Our visit to the beautiful Mosel region of Germany was a highlight of 2016 for us, and this was in no small part because of our stay at Casa Stolte. This historic home was built in the mid-1800's, and has been owned (and obviously loved) by the same family ever since. It is tucked away on a quiet little alley on the banks of the Mosel River. The town itself is completely walkable, with many little shops and delightful sights. It is truly a hidden gem - with magical properties - located in the heart of the wine country, an easy drive from Frankfurt.
We were met by one of the proprietors, Julian, who immediately made us feel welcome, and showed us around our lodging. We were calling it "home" by the time we left! It was better than we had expected. It featured a balcony overlooking the Mosel River, where we spent a good deal of time watching the boats, the birds, and simply relaxing here. The balcony was accessed from the living room - tastefully decorated in comfortable period furnishings. There is an extensive library in the apartment.
The proprietors have thoughtfully left travel information and brochures about the area so one can plan the day's sightseeing or activities. But if you really want to get a feel for the town, ask brothers Julian or Manuel or their parents for recommendations. They're happy to chat if you like, and they know loads about the history of the place and where "the good stuff is". Incidentally, it is possible to walk to many interesting places, if you have a comfortable pair of shoes, and you don't mind a hike.
There is a full modern kitchen here, and grocery shops within walking distance if you prefer to do your own cooking or have dietary requirements the local restaurants might not accommodate. Dishes, pots and pans, silverware, glasses - everything is there. There's even a picnic basket!
The bathroom has a washer/dryer available if needed, and great water pressure for a hot shower. Again, everything is provided including a hairdryer. The bedroom has plenty of storage space and a comfortable bed. The area is very quiet and peaceful. The only noise you'll wake to is birdsong or church bells from the many ancient churches in the area.
The gardens around the Stolte home are wonderful! Many of the features are original, dating back to the 1800's - but the garden has evolved since then, too. Julian works in the garden daily, and you can tell. It's worth wandering around outside to enjoy this. Little sitting areas are tucked away in places where you can enjoy the views, smell the flowers, and watch the birds. Take a stroll around - it's more than worth it.
Would we recommend this accommodation? Absolutely, and without hesitation. We came there a little stressed out from a long flight, and left relaxed and fortified! Wonderful!
