We had booked two nights’ accommodation (150€) a few months earlier. For us, it was not a random weekend stay. We were meeting our close family members who had come to Grenoble.
We chose La Ferme du Bois Barbu as we wanted to hike in Vercors, and because the hotel had good reviews.
Using Booking.com, we gave our approximate time of arrival between 4 and 5 PM, and had reserved breakfasts for two mornings (38€).
We had also several weeks prior to our trip asked them (in French) about dining options at La Ferme du Bois Barbu. However, that e-mail was never answered.
We drove from Nice on 15 April via Sisteron. Our travel time was about 6 hours. When driving, I always keep my phone closed. We arrived at 5 PM. The hotel doors were locked, lights turned off, no further information on the door. We went to the nearby neighbor as we first thought the house was part of the hotel. The lady on site told us the hotel was closed down. The evening was approaching, and we needed a room for the night. We drove back to Villard de Lans center where the tourist office was still open. We told them what had happened. Fortunately, they found a room for two nights at Hotel Dauphin in the village center.
Once checked in, I was able to check my e mail and SMS. La Ferme du Bois Barbu had in fact tried to contact me during our travel. At 12.02 hrs an e-mail had been received via Booking.com. The hotel informed us that they could not accommodate us that evening. The preceding SMS referred to personal reasons. They had allegedly booked us a room at the nearby hotel la Framboisine instead where the price of the room was supposed to be less than at La Ferme du Bois Barbu.
We were astonished that there was no earlier communication regarding the closure. The next day (16 April) I received another mail from Booking.com: Because of “no show” the hotel has charged me €150.
I checked my credit card account, the hotel had in fact charged me 188€ (Two nights and breakfasts). I contacted booking.com, they have forwarded a copy of my communication to the hotel with a request that I should not be charged. As per today, I have not been reimbursed. In the e-mail sent, they themselves admit having closed the hotel, and booked another place in Bois Barbu. We did not even know that there were other neighbor hotels in that rural area, and didn’t see any when visiting the location.
After decades of travel in various parts of the world, nothing like this has ever happened to me. There seem to be several decent hotels in the center of Villard de Lans including Dauphin where we stayed.
