We arrived at the Alp’Hotel via a flight to Geneva from Oxford airport – yes, Oxford! The new once-a-week service provided by the Swiss airline Baboo is pure joy, like flying used to be a long time ago, with exemplary service and a lack of queues even in Geneva on a peak Saturday in the ski season.
There are many good things about the Alp' Hotel – decent sized room with balcony, large modern bathroom, very friendly and helpful staff (with the odd exception), good location not far from the ski lifts, free wi-fi, etc. The main drawback, however, is that the advertised 'bar' does not, in fact, exist. There is a rather soulless 'lounge' on the first floor to which drinks can be taken – but it's not the same thing and there is no social feel to it. One of the normally pleasant aspects of a skiing holiday is to be able to relax over a beer or two or an aperitif after a long bath before dinner in congenial company. It seems that the restaurant has recently been configured to accommodate more diners from outside of the hotel and the bar has been a casualty in the process. This needs to be made clear.
The food was also a little disappointing. It had all the characteristics of unnecessarily poshed-up three-star hotel cuisine rather than authentic Haute Savoie cooking. The cheese trolley and the desserts, however, the latter presumably bought in from a local patisserie, almost, bit not quite, made up for otherwise so-so dinners.
So – next time on Baboo, certainly. The Alp’ Hotel, probably not.
