We stayed in one of the "logis" rooms i.e. a room in a separate building, up several flights of steps, looking out over the bay and very quiet (in contrast to what others have said about road-side rooms in the main building). The room was small (just about enough space to walk around the beds) but had a good bathroom and comfy beds. Best of all, we had a large balcony (which the hotel told us it allocates to people on a surprise basis - you can't book it) which was a fabulous piece of luck. We thought Euros 15 a bit much for breakfast so paid Euros 10 at the Vieille Auberge where we'd had dinner.

Being on the rock for the night--then waking up early the next morning to go to the Abbaye--is the way to go. Because being on the Mont is so amazing the hotel didn't have to do much to complete our positive experience. This hotel suffices; comfortable beds, clean amenities.

Room Tip: When you arrive by car you'll be directed to P3 which is a parking lot designated for hotel guests. At the gate to the parking lot you call the hotel and are given a code. One of the most frustrating moments was when a woman (not French) could not understand that we were exactly in the right place--simply needing the code. It look a long while to convince her despite her having our name. Afterward, a shuttle will take you to Le Mont St. Michel. Pack light, leave stuff in your car, once you disembark from the shuttle you'll have a long way to go UP.

Mont St-Michel was astounding but we had very low expectations of the hotel, however, we were very impressed. The staff were polite and helpful, the room was well appointed (although small) with lots of character and the location is excellent. We also enjoyed our evening meal in the restaurant.

Room Tip: Walk on the ramparts to access the abbey to avoid the crowds and awful shops on the Grande Rue

Auberge Saint-Pierre is a lovely quaint hotel in the heart of Le Mont St Michel. It was very easy to find being right on the main road and not far from the entrance to the citadel. The rooms are spotless, the bathrooms new and clean. The staff friendly and helpful.
The restaurant was OK, but it did stay open later than the others on the Mont. It was so nice staying on the Mont as after 8/9pm the day trippers left and the streets were quiet again. During the day it is very busy and crowded. Everything about the hotel was perfect, except that we had a room overlooking the main cobbled road and at 5:30 in the morning two very noisy forklifts rattled up and down the road bringing supplies and taking away the trash. It lasted for about two hours and was quite loud and intrusive. So, my advice is to make sure you get a room on the back side of the hotel away from the road if you are not an early riser.

Room Tip: get a room away from the street

As other reviewers have noted, the main advantage to staying on the mont itself is the chance to get up early and stay late to truly appreciate everything without the crowds. The Auberge Saint-Pierre was great for that. Sometimes I love crowds, and I'm certainly not one of those tourists who seems to get frustrated by the fact that they came to a beautiful spot and some other nice people are actually there as well; however, it is wonderful to have the chance to enjoy the mont when there is a sense of the peace and tranquility of such a majestic place.

We stayed in a family room, which was on the top floor. Just down the hall is a little door and walkway that connects to the main stone wall. The kids loved their stay here. We had heard bad stories about hotels on the mont sending guests to less desirable overflow rooms. This didn't happen to us, although I had also sent an email asking for confirmation that we would be in the main building of the hotel. Our room was exactly as we had asked and this allowed us to have a wonderful stay on the island.

The staff were excellent.

In a country with thousands of fantastic restaurants we did not find any on the mont.

I have also done Mont St. Michel as a daytrip but staying on the mont is a much better experience. Don't forget to wake up as early as possible and take advantage of the early morning peace.
