Logis Auberge de la Providence
Ranked #7 of 11 Hotels in Saint-Flour
Reviewed 21 September 2009

We chose this hotel without previously checking any trip advisor entries and perhaps if we’d done so, we might have elected to try elsewhere on the strength of a few unfavourable reviews. What we found was entirely to our liking, if slightly quirky.

The hotel is situated in the lower part of the picturesque St-Flour with the high town’s imposing presence to the north. Park opposite and cross over to the attractive and welcoming frontage. Check in was very quick; we were handed our key and advised of our room number by the proprietor.

The room was clean and tidy with a view out over the road to a farm track and some fields. It’s rural and tractors rumble past during the day. The bed was comfortable which, for me, ticks the biggest box a hotel needs to have ticked. Bathroom and toilet facilities were basic but entirely functional. There was a flat screen television which had some sport channels which was a pleasant surprise as it meant we were able to see a live football match which I doubt we’d have seen elsewhere. There was no air-con but it wasn’t needed anyway.

The restaurant has the menu outside and you make your choices there from two starters and two mains. You then enter the restaurant and give your order and choose the wine. The proprietor acts as waiter and operates a system to make the whole service run efficiently. The food is good and regional and the local wine we had was a wonder. Breakfast (traditional French) is served the restaurant and brought to your table. The proprietor chatted with us as he tidied up after other guests.

For the price, I felt we got good value for money and a very enjoyable stay in a traditional old French hotel that has been in the family for generations.

The hotel is situated in the lower area but this was not a problem for us - and the room quality was really nice and to a high standard.

However, the owner was unfriendly to the point of rudeness and seemed to resent the fact that we were even staying at his hotel. After one night we decicded to move on elsewhere and not stay the planned 2nd night. When we tried to check out and pay he confiscated our luggage (after a tug of war), became agressive, locked the main door and would not let us leave until we paid him for 2 nights. We had to go to the police station for help. The police were brilliant, and accompanied us back to the hotel to ensure that the 2nd night was refunded. Although this did not happen until after a very heated and long argument between the owner and the police.
