My wife, little son (currently 5 months old) and I booked the half-day tour in the Kanta Elephant Sanctuary. In the beginning we were not sure whether we should participate in any activity with elephants or not. Therefore we did a lot research (e.g. reviews on Tripadvisor and Google, recommendation of our hotel, etc.) and after some long thinking we decided to give it a try in Kanta Elephant Sanctuary. As you we'll see below we are very happy, that we decided to do it.
Besides the tour itself also the transfers were well organized and the staff was very kind. They gave us detailed information on their sanctuary respectively the keeping of the elephants, the elephants themselves and the correct interaction with them.
From the moment we arrived at the sanctuary we had the feeling that they are treating the elephants very well (we talked to the other participants and they shared our opinion). The elephants live in a large enclosure where they can move around freely (i.e. they are not chaned up at a specific point).
Here some facts on the tour. We were in a group of 19 persons (including my wife, son and me) and were accompanied by one guide and one mahut for each of the the five elephants (three grown-ups and two offsprings). Even we were 19 persons, the group was not too big. After a detailed introduction by our guide we got clothes from the sanctuary and then we went to the enclosure to feed the elephants with sugar cane. During the feeding you have sufficient time to caress them and take photos. In the last part of the tour you can take a bath with the elephants and wash them.
The whole tour was really an amazing and unique experience and being in close touch with the elephants is simply stunning.
From our point of view the Kanta Elephant Sanctuary is a great institution that actually cares about the well-being of their elephants. It is definitely worth a visit and we'll do the tour some day again.
