Monte Faito, at 1100 metres (3600feet) and almost the same height as Vesuvius at 1281 metres (4200 feet), will be the highlight to your visit to Castellammare di Stabia, located between Sorrento/Vico Equense and Pompeii. The summit provides spectacular 360° panoramic views of both the Gulf of Naples as well as the Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast with the Island of Capri in the distance. The ascent will take 8 minutes in the cable car that holds 35 people. The first departure is at 9.35 am and the last return is at 16.25. Do check the details as the service does not operate during the late autumn, winter and early spring periods. You can take a car to the top via Vico Equense. The charge is €8 and in my opinion the best investment you can make during your stay on the Sorrento Peninsula.

We stumbled upon this by accident when looking for things to do near our hotel (Towers).

You board the cable car from Castellammare station on the Circumvesuviana railway line. The journey up Mount Faito is nothing short of spectacular.

It feels like this should be much better promoted! Absolutely recommend for anyone staying in the Sorrento area!

The cable car from Castellammare di Stabia station runs every half an hour or so and takes around 15 minutes. Tickets are very reasonable and can be purchased in the circumvesuviana station. Once you have your ticket, walk along the platform to the cablecar entrance.
At the top is a cafe/restaurant and the remains of a hotel which appears to have been abandoned. There are toilets in the cafe and also the cablecar station.
Walk down the rather rough path, past the various radio masts, and you will find the very best views of the bay of Naples and across to Vesuvius.
Take an extra layer if you plan to stay at the top for any time.
Highly recommended.

head for the resturant terrace by turning right and then right again when you come out at the top of the funicular- its a 10 miunte walk but worth it for the panoramic views from the restaurant terrace.

This is well worth the money. The views from the top are absolutely stunning. There are quite a few walks and established vistas up there plus a place or two to eat and drink. Just be aware that it can be a little cooler at the top so if it's late in season or not the hottest day you may need another layer of clothing.
