We stayed here with friends for their first night ever in Italy. They couldn't have had a better experience after all the homogenised airport, motorway etc experiences earlier in the day. The mountain setting of La Montagna is stunning, the village is full of old stone buildings, and Alla Battuta is an ancient tower house converted to provide simple but completely functional visitor rooms. There is a roof terrace with stunning views over the village and mountains. Alessandro and his parents were so welcoming to us, both in the evening when we arrived and over breakfast the next morning (which his mother provides her adjacent home). Alla Battuta don't do evening meals themselves but there is a restaurant within easy walking distance, very traditional (no menu, the owner talks to you about what kind of thing you like and then brings food and wine until you run out of room, all at a very reasonable fixed price!). This would be a good base for a longer stay, as Sansepolcro down in the valley is a lovely town, and the whole east Tuscany/north Umbria area is full of interesting places and lovely countryside and devoid, so far as we saw, of mass tourism.

Room Tip: Worth mentioning any difficulty with stairs on booking as it is a tower house!

I find it almost impossible to express how amazing Alla Battuta is! Well, I say that, but really it is Alessandro, Ofelia and Luigino who are amazing.

Yes, the B&B is in what I consider to be the most beautiful spot in the world (and I've seen a few!), with views down the valley to forever. Yes, the rooms are typically Tuscan with personal touches and ensuite bathrooms with the great benefit of small living areas and kitchens which allow you be a bit more self sufficient. Yes, the village has two of the best restaurants I have ever eaten in, totally Tuscan, totally special. Yes, nearby Sansepolcro is a hidden gem of beautiful architecture, fascinating history, fabulous art and culture, warm people, style, and great restaurants and bars. Yes, the hills and woods and wildlife are spectacular (and even moreso under Ale's guidance). And yes, all this comes at ridiculously good value.

But the Puleri family outshine all these wonderful things. I could, by this stage, be considered biased. My family is restoring a farmhouse near the village, and in the early days of the project we bounced from one place to stay to the next, enjoying them all. But since my parents first stayed at Alla Battuta we haven't wanted to go anywhere else. They came back raving about the beautiful, warm, welcoming friends they had made, in the Puleri's. Despite having very limited Italian, and Ofelia and Luigino's limited English, they were warmly welcomed and amazingly invited to dinner with the family. Alessandro, the son, has almost perfect English and so a great friendship between families started over the wonderful homecooked food, the likes of which Jamie Oliver could only dream of. Countless hundreds of people have eaten around the Puleri family table, such is the warmth and generosity of this family.

I was soon to experience this when my parents returned with me and my brother in tow a month or two later. I have now lost count of my trips, usually for long weekends, most often with my brother, frequently with my parents, sometimes with friends or alone. I have been embraced to the heart of the kindest family I know, and am referred to as their Irish daughter. My italian has improved (but with a local accent) and I now, thanks to Alessandro, have many lovely friends there.

I'd love to keep this place to myself, it's so special. But that wouldn't be fair! If you go, soak up the magic, immerse yourself in the real Tuscany, and resign yourself to the fact that you will be unable to stay away.
