Well located. Decent rooms which require some refurbishment. Familiar hotel. Cheap price. We paid 60 euro per night breakfast (poor) in August. Praia a Mare is not a very brilliant place but it is very near from beautiful Maratea. Good choice.

I had a great surprise when I found this hotel.
I was looking for a simple place to spend one night on my trip through the coast and the hotel was perfect.
The staff is very kind and warm, like when I asked about the check out time, the lady said to me not to worry, that I should have the breakfast and then take a bath on the beach. Very nice!
The room that I stayed has a nice view of the beach and the sound of the waves was amazing.
Everything was clean and organized.
The breakfast was very good too.

I have recently returned from a five night stay at the Hotel Garden, Praia a Mare. I made a late reservation with Booking.Com, the week before my departure date, after noticing a competitive offer on a double-room, single occupancy - bed and breakfast basis,

On arrival I was pleasantly greeted by reception staff, which continued throughout my stay. My room was outstanding and I wondered if this was one of the more superior suites, which under normal circumstances would possibly have been charged at a higher rate. I had a balcony with side sea view as well as the stunning panorama of the surrounding Calabrian hillside. Also my room was in a private area of the hotel which in my opinion was one of the best positions.

I was offered a choice of lunch and/or dinner, at an additional cost of 20 euros, per three-course meal. I therefore accepted the offer and was given the menu for the evening ahead. I was pleasantly surprised; to the extent I decided to continue on half-board basis for the duration of my stay. The food was very good and consisted of the local Calabrian specialities. The menu was printed in Italian therefore my basic language skills were put to the test! I also ordered a bottle of wine and mineral water, both of which were labelled with my room number and returned to my table the following evening and thereafter, until fully consumed. I decided against lunch, which I purchased from the local supermarket and enjoyed on my room balcony.

Unfortunately breakfast was somewhat of a disappointment and badly organised. The young waiter often forgot to bring the croissant to the table which proved slightly embarrassing when having to request this. Also by 9.00 am there seemed to be diminished supplies at the buffet table which were never replenished. Sadly I feel this is a problem in comparison to other accommodations where I have stayed. By no means am I suggesting the provision of a banquet in the mornings; however I feel a basic procedure ensuring paying guests are given the choice of a reasonably organised breakfast, should be applied,

The hotel has its own section of beach situated opposite, where umbrellas/deck chairs and umbrellas are included in the hotel cost. Also there are light snacks/non-alcoholic drinks available which are provided by a lovely lady by the name of Barbara, who went out of her way to help in any way she could. She also introduced me to her lovely creation of 'Creme Cafe' which she said was a combination of coffee, milk, fresh cream and sugar which she then chills and serves by the glass; absolutely gorgeous, though not good for the figure I would imagine!!

Overall I enjoyed my stay at the Hotel Garden, which was conveniently positioned for the beach and the town centre; a block away, at the rear of the property. Praia a Mare is a lovely town which has a beautiful tree lined 'passeggiata' where people congregate and walk during the balmy evenings. This seems the type of town where time has thankfully stood still and which nestles safely amidst the Northern Calabrian hillside. Despite its status there is a thriving feel about the place and seems to be no shortage of facilities.

I did however encounter a slight problem the day before my departure when I attempted to purchase a direct InterCity train ticket to Rome. As I specifically required 'InterCity', the local tobaconnists were unable to provide, as they only stock for 'regional' trains. This would have meant 2-3 changes in order to reach my final destination. I was however directed to the train station ticket office which is conveniently situated approximately 300 metres from the town centre. However I arrived to find people waiting outside, though no attendant was available. Also from information given to me by disgruntled customers, it seemed unlikely that the office would be opening that day, which I was informed is a constant problem for the townsfolk.

At this point I was under the impression that a journey to the neighbouring town of Scalea would be necessary, where due to having stayed there a couple of years ago, I was aware of a tourist office, which hopefully would still have been open and from whom I could obtain this type of ticket. However, as a last resort, I returned to the hotel and explained my situation. It was suggested by the receptionist that I return early in the afternoon, when her colleague would be on duty, who could arrange a ticket to be e-mailed to the hotel by a friend in the travel agency. I did just that and by 6.00 pm that evening a ticket was awaiting in reception, for which I was extremely grateful . I would advise anyone visiting this town requiring InterCity train tickets, to purchase beforehand, of course checking validity dates. I was sorry I had not purchased tickets whilst at my previous location of Tropea, where these were widely available.

I would recommend this hotel for its great location, excellent presentation, room quality, cleanliness and the friendly, helpful reception staff, whom may I add are a valuable asset to the hotel. I would however suggest that management check the breakfast situation as I feel this shortfall spoils an otherwise fabulous hotel.

Staff were friendly, attentive and most helpful. Hotel located in excellent spot near beach, and near shops. Seemed to be a family-run hotel, with everyone involved, and which was very appealing. No complaints. Only thing, when we visited, towards end of may 2012, - the weather was rotten, and the season hadn't started, so there was a lot of 'repair' work going on in the hotel, which meant that their drilling kept us awake instead of us enjoying our afternoon nap! But other than that, the hotel was excellent.
