This excellent hotel is located overlooking a peaceful valley and set amongst their own vineyards and olive groves. It is accessed by a quiet rural road and is less than ten minutes drive to Orvieto. The drive itself and the hotel terrace both offer lovely views of the old town.
The property had three separate buildings accessed via a private driveway. Ours was the middle building and our room was named Grand Cru. Our suite was extremely spacious. There was a large king bed with four posters, plenty of comfortable seating and a separate lounge with TV. There was a deep and private balcony that felt like a cave and there were wonderful views across the vineyards to the hillside beyond. The bathroom was large and practical with a big double shower and a comfortable curved bath. Coffee is available in room. At first we found ourselves hot because we could not get the air con to go, but we eventually acclimatised. Again it seemed to be set towards heating and could not be turned to cool. The one gripe of this particular room was the mattress. It was extremely creaky which meant everytime you moved you threatened to wake the other person up. Apart from this the room was excellent.
There is a lovely footpath that leads down to reception which also includes the bar that doubles as the breakfast room. Another minor disadvantage is that breakfast does not commence until 7.30am. The breakfast spread was quite reasonable with good bacon and real eggs, a good range of buns and cakes, meat and cheese, some fruit and yoghurt. We settled for an American style coffee in the percolator as we did not know if the barista made coffees were charged additional.
There are nice walks through the vineyards. There is a dam at the back of the property and a small stream which is home to wildlife and we are pretty confident we saw a river otter in the stream and Coypu in the dam.
We greatly enjoyed the ambience and the setting for our two night stay. If the mattress was fixed it would have been excellent.

I almost hate to review this exceptionally wonderful property for fear that others will discover it...! I will recommend it to all my friends and come back again and again. It's a truly exceptional value.

Great place, great location and amazing views. nice wine.

A group of friends stayed here for a wedding nearby, lovely atmosphere.

The pool bar could have stayed open later, 7pm was a bit early. but otherwise pretty spot on.

Altaroccas location is the best possible and the rooms are cosy and clean, the bed sounds a lot when you turn around though. The spa area is just amazing and so are the two pool areas with bars. The restaurant is OK but the food needs more seasoning. The breakfast is quite good but there should have been fresh orange juice (you need to buy it for 6 euro!). Overall Altarocca is an amazing place to stay and I would highly recommend it!

We loved our stay here. The view from our balcony was amazing, and the grounds are beautiful. We also walked to the nearby Rocca Ripesena, which was a wonderful little hike with a great view of Orvieto. The wine tasting is a bit overpriced for what it is, but still very enjoyable. Overall a lovely experience. However, we do not recommend eating at the restaurant, the food was underwhelming for the price, and the service was slow and rude.
