We stayed at Grien for 2 weeks in March-2018. It’s a very convenient family-run property with exceptional food service and easy access to all ski areas of Sella Ronda. The owners - Rainer and Monica - are treating their guest as VIP-person with sharp attention to every detail in your vacation agenda, from ski track advice to wine typical to the South Tyrol and areas around.

Although the property is located somewhat distant from Ortisei center and two main ski lifts the hotel provides a shuttle available to guests almost all day around; they will take you to the lifts at Ortisei in 5 minutes. They also arrange two transfers in the morning to Santa Christina lift that brings you directly to Saslong pista and saves greatly your time to get to Sella Ronda.

Food treatment is really outstanding and deserves Michelin gourmet stars: two chefs are doing their best to provide South Tyrolean culinary top picks adding some international flavor. One comes from Sardegna and makes exceptional homemade pasta. Monica provides cheese tasting evening once a week that covers 20+ cheeses from the area.

Wine list is extensive and reasonably priced, Tyrolean stuff is well-presented and pretty affordable while international part of the menu looks a way expensive. For instance they have full page of German Rieslings that may be quite rare but heavily priced.

A real gem for the restaurant and the whole property and its team is Paolo. This man carefully guides you through all your way in ski vacation, towns to visit nearby (e.g. we found Merano - a hidden gem of Dolomites - thanks to his guidance), different food and wines etc. His service is totally outstanding and we are sure he is an asset for owners. Paolo - you’re the best!!! Keep going!

The property is small and staff encourages the guests to communicate with each other making a unique atmosphere “being at friendly home”. We met American family that travels to this place for 7th year in a row.

Rooms are not that large that someone may expect from the property of this class; we had Double Superior Dolomites room with nice balcony and angle view to Sasso Lungo (although it is not a front view - do not expect postcard picture here). However the room is clean and modern, shower is made in glass corner and not large as well. If you travel with children you should opt for a higher room category because of limited space.

We will definitely think about summer visit.

Great Thanks to owners and staff - the hotel is definitely worth for ski vacation and fully justified from price/quality angle.

We just finished a week's skiing holiday at this family run property.
And what a week we had. Amazing sunny weather (despite -20) and great slopes. Don't miss the opportunity to do the Sella Ronda. We took the orange clockwise run and the 5hr tour was absolutely great with mostly long red slopes that our three year old managed it with ease.
The hotel has a great panoramic location overlooking the valley. But that also mean you are a loooong walk uphill from town. The hotel provides you with free local transport cards and there is a bus stop just outside the hotel. The hotel also runs a shuttle at your convenience to/from the closest lifts. But only twice in the morning to St Caterina from where you have access to the bigger system and more challenging slopes of ValGardena.
Because of the distance to town and the convenience we opted for the half board. We could obviously have eaten well for much less in town but we appreciated the convenience, the set menus and the flexibility shown to our kids - the menu are not really for children but pasta dishes or schnitzels were offered as alternatives.
The hotel also has a great selection of wines. A treasure itself.
As we were a family we were given a family room (two connected rooms with a common entrance) that in the summer has a great terrace overlooking the valley. The room is severely dated though and the tv offers a very limited selection of channels. Not at all what you could expect from an acclaimed 4 star property.
We could however see (and their website promotes) some new/renovated rooms with more modern style and wooden floors instead of carpets.
But as we only used the room to sleep we didn't really mind and the daily cleaning was great. But if you plan to spend more time in the room you'd better ask for a newer/renovated room.
One of the great assets of the hotel is their wellness area with both a nice swimming pool- the kids loved it after a full day on the mountain - and a well equipped spa with a huge whirlpool, steam sauna, Finnish sauna, relax area and small gym. The spa has a 12y limit. If you are prude you should also be aware that swimming clothes are not allowed in the spa. So wrap your towel around :-)
Finally, you most often get what you pay for, and Grien is not an exception. We paid a lot for a great winter experience.

We just spent 5 nights at Hotel Grien and would highly recommend it.
It is a family run, small hotel above the town of Ortisei with wonderful mountain and valley views.
Rainer and Monica are very hard working, efficient, outstanding hosts. They, with their staff, take care of every detail--reception, the bar, the restaurant , the shuttle, and everything in between.
Where do we start--
**Monica took the time to show us our room and amenities and provide us with complimentary bus passes for the entire area which was clean, convenient and easy to use. So glad we didn't rent a car because it was not needed.
**The private shuttle to and from town was always available and very convenient to get not only to town, but access to the gondola stations. ( we purchased a three day pass)
We were able to take gondola to Seceda, hike along the ridge, through pastures into Col Raiser, then take local bus back to Ortisei.
**Rain and snow at upper elevations prohibited us from hiking to their Alpine hut, but we went on a wonderful hike at lower elevation to a monastery and through pastures with Rainer's mother, Getrud, and had a wonderful day; stopping along the way for a delightful lunch.
**We stayed in room 101 which had its own grassy terrace with lounge chairs--great for reading, having a snack or enjoying a glass of wine after a day of hiking. (It is next to the rabbit hut, which was no problem, but might have been nice to have it a little more blocked off than it was. )
**We booked the half fare package with breakfast and dinner included and were so glad we did--absolutely fabulous!
**Breakfast included everything one could want including special order eggs or omelets. The juicer and abundance of fruit were special treats.
**Every dinner was quite special with several options and cannot think of anything that was not prepared to perfection.
**The buffet of appetizers before dinner was quite expansive and very good.
**The wine that was recommended with each dinner was outstanding. If we didn't finish one night, it was saved for us for the next evening. The price seemed quite reasonable for the outstanding quality and variety of the wine.
**We would be remiss if we did not mention Paolo, who greeted us each morning, took care of us for both breakfast and dinner, at the bar and shared travel tips with us for not only for this area, but also for some of our upcoming destinations.
When we had to leave, we could have taken the shuttle to town, then taken complimentary local bus which would have probably worked fine, but decided to hire a taxi to the train station in Bolzano.
As you can tell, the entire experience was outstanding.
Thank you so very much to Rainer, Monica, Paolo, and Getrud for a truly memorable experience at Hotel Grien and to this area of the Dolomites.

I can't rate this hotel highly enough. Everyone from owner to cleaners ensured our stay was the best it could be. We stayed for 8 nights in a family room which was perfect for our needs. Wonderful views and kept spotlessly clean. Food is outstanding. Loved the location. The kind of hotel you'd go back to year after year. thank you.

We stayed for our skiing vacation at this property and were amazed by the hospitality of the owners, the excellent service and friendly staff, very good food and the premises were spotless clean.
Our daughter was ill having high fever and the owners and staff jumped in to help and make sure we got the needed medical advice. The location is not central but very quiet with nice surroundings. You can walk down to the center of Ortisei in about 15 min. For getting to the ski lifts they ensure a perfect shuttle bus service, including pick-up at the end of your ski day.
We highly recommend this hotel and will be certainly returning.
PS: the area is a ski paradise and beats easily most of the Austrian ski resorts
