Owner description: The Railway Museum of Apulia Lecce is an important collection of tools and other objects that are ideally trace the history of railway Puglia. Inside are 32 antique vehicles of mixed age and several railway companies, from FS to FSE passing the Tobacco Factory of Lecce, in addition to this you can also see up close the historic train "Salento Express".

Museo Ferroviario della Puglia (Apulia Railway Museum). The building is located right across from Lecce’s train station (as the crow flies), but you can’t get there directly. So we walked from the station and turned right onto Viale Gallipoli, continued until we saw a brown sign indicating the museum, turned right again and went through an overpass, then around the back to the entrance (about a 10 minute walk all told). The museum has an interesting collection of railway memorabilia, switching equipment and rolling stock, including a jail coach once used to transport prisoners. Also noteworthy are the model train displays (divided up by nation) housed in some of the vintage passenger cars. The two volunteers we met during our visit were extremely friendly and informative. And they were clearly passionate about railroading and preservation. The only down note is that we didn’t give ourselves sufficient time to see everything in depth. Maybe next time …

This museum Is staffed by volunteers so has restricted opening times. It is totally off the beaten track and not accessible from the train station. However it is worth the effort of finding it. My husband and I were followed round by a very enthusiastic member of staff who did his best to explain what we were seeing. His English was limited and our Itslian non existant but somehow we managed! An amazingly detailed diorama is being built and our guide kindly turned it on so we could see the train chugging around it.

Worth going if you have children that like old fashion trains. The best thing of the museum are the people that work inside very nice.Knowing the Italian it was very investing to hear the guide explaining every thing, but not sure they have english tours.

We are not train buffs , but as we were in Lecce for a long time we thought "why not?".
First things: it is typically Italian in that it isn't open all the time , so mornings and late afternoons (check) - secondly even though it is the other side of the train station , you cant get to it thru the station (again, typically Italian).
To get to it , take last left before the staiton (from old town direction), at end of road turn right , under the pass and immediately right and follow your nose (and the signs).
It is cheap and has some fantastic old photos and you can wonder in all the old trains, some are a good reminder of how luxurious things are now!
its cheap , and a good alternative if you have the need for a break from culture.

English booklet available. Easy to navigate and a fascinating way to spend a couple of hours. Would be better if you could access it through Lecce station but nevertheless it was well signed. Staff helpful and polite. Inexpensive but worth the detour
