The (not so) Grand Hotel

Review of Grand Hotel
2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 10 Jun 2022via mobile
We chose this hotel based on TA reviews & were so disappointed. It was one of the most expensive rooms we stayed in during our Italian road trip & was the worst experience.

The disappointments….
Intermittent Wi-Fi more off than on!
Dated small ‘standard’ room
Tiny bathroom with inadequate storage space
Definitely 3* max not 4*
Bar staff girl was miserable & didn’t even speak when we greeted her!
Breakfast was poor quality, food was slow in being replenished, staff inefficient & dour
Pool chairs uncomfortable
Uk adapter doesn’t work in electrics
shower was mainly cold with hot spurts but strong flow

However…
Receptionist Alena was so welcoming & charming
Spotless throughout
Large balcony room 209
Air con is powerful
Pool was nice temperature
Good location
Parking outside on street

Wouldn’t recommend or return

Dear Customer, thank you for writing a review about your stay at Grand Hotel, our historic hotel in Forte dei Marmi. The opinions of our customers, as you know, are very dear to us to constantly improve our service. We regret that your stay was not up to your expectations. We are very sorry that you did not like the design of the room, we would have certainly provided to meet your needs and we regret that you have decided to penalize so negatively our structure.
As for breakfast, however, it is characterized by enormous variety and completeness. In fact, it offers hot and cold, sweet and savory dishes, following both continental and Anglo-Saxon traditions.
Our staff, then, is perfectly organized and made up of young and experienced staff that stands out for its strong orientation to the guest, for courtesy, professionalism, reliability and for the commitment that is deep daily in his work. We hope you will reconsider your judgement and allow us the pleasure of welcoming you back to our Grand Hotel or to another of our more than 30 facilities throughout Italy. Best regards.

Typically Italian hotel with wall to wall marble this is a very nice hotel. Very clean and well maintained, we had 2 rooms on second floor, with side view of sea in one direction and mountains in other. The hotel is about 15mins transfer from Pisa and maybe 5 mins walk from town centre. Nice and quiet apart from Friday and Saturday night when everyone is posing in their lambos on the main rd (couldn't hear it in room though). Pool area is good and room air con perfect. Recommend going to Pisa on train (either get a number 35 bus from town centre or taxi which about 25 euros, you can't walk to train station) if you go to tourist information they can give you bus timetable, buy tickets from tabac BEFORE you get on bus. Also recommend cinque Terre and mountain walks in Seravezza. Food was excellent and all staff made our stay a real pleasure.

Room tip: There is a tabac on street behind hotel for bus tickets

Best location in FdM. Easy access to beach, centre, restaurants, and everything else. Staff is amazing and very cooperative. Clean and spacious room, with a nice balcony. Bike rides from the hotel are also a must. Breakfast is a 7/10. All-in-all, a very refreshing experience with the friendliest and most welcoming staff.

Superb choice of stay in Forte dei Marmi and hope to come back soon:

- Location: great location in front of the seaside with easy access to beaches and the city centre (less than 5 min walk)
- Room: very spacious, bright and comfortable room with nice seafront view
- Food: we chose the half-board option and the quality of the food for the evening menu has been impeccable both in terms of quality and variety of choices (fish, meat and vegetable options) for a 4-course menu. This really deserves a special mention
- Service: excellent service from all the staff - everyone has been extremely welcoming and available throughout our stay and this has been really what has made our trip special and worth coming back for (a special thanks to Andrea, the maitre, for his professionalism, kindness and availability)

We (2 persons) stayed in this hotel for a week in sept 2021. We've booked it via TUI and we're suprised about the good quality of the hotel compared to the low price.
The room was large with a good airconditioning (although we had to ask to turn it on at the desk, you would expect this to be done already before checking in). The bathroom was quite narrow. It's a typical Italian hotelroom with colorful tiles on the floor. The room could have been cleaner, especially near the toilet, but it was solved properly when asked. Room was also equipped with a small seaview balcony, a safe and a big TV-screen.
The personnel was very friendly, except 2 guys in the restaurant. One of them even managed to insult another (non-Italian) customer, when she had brought some sand from the beach in the dining room.
The breakfast was fine (compared to other Italian hotels), the diner was moderate (especially the fish dishes could be better). The food quality improved, when a large group of bus tourists had left. Although we had a seperate dining room, this group made an awful lot of noise during diner time because it was so large. The prices of the drinks were reasonable.
The hotel was located at the boulevard and very near to the beach and the town centre.
In front of the hotel is a swimming pool with a lot of beach chairs. I also rented a bike at the hotel (thay only have small women bikes without gears - that's a pity) and was suprised about the amount of safe cycling paths in the environment.
Forte dei Marmi itself is - to our surprise - a very expensive place, with a lot of luxury shops. We also happened to see the finish of the "Crazy Race" with about 100 very expensive sportscars!
There's an awful lot of things to day in the neighbourhood, e.g. the Carrara marble quarries, Lucca, Pisa, Cinque Terre and Florence. Also don't forget to visit the market of Forte Dei Marmi, the most luxurious we've ever seen! It's very near to the hotel.

Stayed in this hotel with the Travelsphere group during their Cinque Terre Tour last week. I think the pictures don't quite do the hotel justice. I normally stay in hotels a lot plusher than this but this was the hotel chosen for the tour.

I must admit even though it is very basic when it comes to furniture and lacks ambience due to furnishings and colours I cannot fault the cleanliness and the nice staff that were working during my stay.

I had a standard double on the first floor towards the front of the hotel facing towards the sea across the road, the room was large bright and airy, simply furnished but with lots of hanging space and drawers, the bathroom was a good size and spotlessly clean - the room is tiled which has good and bad points - nearly slipped twice!
The room really was adequate for my stay as I was out during the day - had a safe and hairdryer in bathroom - I took my own travel jug and coffee as there was not tea/coffee making facilities in the room and I do like a cuppa coffee as soon as my eyes open

There is a bar but annoyingly they didn't like people taking drinks from the bar into the dining room. The drinks are very sensibly priced Aperol Spritz at 6 euros. The bar staff were chatty, helpful - really nice - cant remember his name but the young Albanian bar/ waiter was very pleasant.

I didn't particularly like the food - the salad buffet at the start was far better than the 3 course meal that followed - twice I had fish and eggs that were like rubber! - it was very bland food - and usually turned up luke warm so I wont pass such praise on the food front

The young girls on the Reception desk were also so friendly and extremely helpful, always smiling and there to answer any queries - I did actually mention to the manager of the hotel how nice I found all the staff I came across during my stay

There is a pool which was clean and had adequate beds/seating - there were bikes to rent which I thoroughly recommend - you can cycle to Viareggio about 45 mins each way

The only downside of this area is that the local shops are all designer which if you are not into designer shops leaves you with nothing to do in the evening locally other than eat or drink as there are no nice little shops to stroll in and out of to while away the evening after a meal.

The location is good though to use as a base to tour Pisa, Lucca, Lerici, Cinque Terre, Portofino, Portovenere etc

It literally is a stones throw across the road to a beach but you are looking at 30 euros plus to hire beds/chairs and you are like sardines!

If you are into running and cycling like I am then you will like the way you can run and cycle safely on the designated paths - if you do wave to Andrea Bocelli as you pass his house on the main road!

Room tip: High level & front towards the beach above the restaurant side not road side
