We went to a recital by Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kursak last week. The whole experience was very special. We love opera and have heard both artists quite a few times in London. What was remarkable about Muscat RoH was first the acoustics and then the whole edifice from the entrance through the foyer to our seats. The Euro 2 billion it cost was well spent creating a cultural edifice of magnificence in the Gulf.

The PKF Prague Chamber Orchestra conducted by Marcello Mottadelli acquitted themselves very well both supporting the stars and playing in their own right. The orchestra were resplendent in white bow tie whilst the conductor wore a suit and tie - raising the thought that they were perhaps not well prepared; but we were treated to wonderful playing from the flute in excerpts from Carmen, from the brass in Verdi's Vespri Siciliani overture and some superb full ensemble pianissimos.

Kursak is marvellous. She floats coloratura lines with ease and sang the love duet from the end of Act 1 of Otello with real rapture. Indeed being sung to by husband and wife was special. Alagna is singing Otello now in Vienna. He for me lacks the weight or heave you need for the part but his Cavardossi to start part two was fabulous and had me singing the "mia Serena" phrase where ere I went on our Oman adventure.

Lots of encores and off we went into the warm night graced by this wonderful building and two stars of opera descending on Muscat. Exceptional opera house designed to the very highest standards for an enlightened Sultan.

Massive, heavy style, extraordinary interior fitted out with the most expensive marbles, granite and wood. One of our party asked the guide how much it cost. She said 'It was a gift from the Sultan to his people and you don't ask the price of the gift.'

Beautiful place - great seats in the auditorium. Helpful and friendly staff. Very much worth an evening visit and occasional free ticketed events to look out for.
