Had one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had here after my friend recommended it. The service was awesome and it was so busy as it was Anzac Day but they still managed to fit us in after about 10 mins. I had the Green Machine which is Smashed peas, jalapeno jam, sautéed greens, haloumi + a poached egg atop multigrain toast w/ balsamic glaze. I added some bacon on the side but WOW that jalapeño Jam is just amazing. Definitely go even just for that.

Main Street Café, Main Street, Mordialloc, Victoria

It had been an early start that day – sharing a visit to Melbourne’s CDB with a group of friends for a ‘Let’s do Melbourne’ outing. Meet-up was scheduled for Mordialloc Metro Station to catch the 09.30 train into town. So, what with finding a place to park close by – go figure, this is your classic commuter country; there is nowhere within a kilometre or so of the station available for parking – you have to have time in hand to find somewhere. However, take a more optimistic approach – find a place quickly - and there’s time for a coffee before riding into town.

Our second time for this kind of monthly outing – our first had been in February - and it was also our second time into the Main Street Café. Great location on the corner of Main Street and the 30 m side road that takes you to the Metro station. There’s an external covered veranda over the pavement providing outside seating. Inside the counter is to one side on the right with seating arranged around the walls and in the centre of the rooms. Kitchen out back. Interesting colours and décor that provides an immediate up-market feel for what is essentially a café in the high street.

‘Couple of coffees to take away, please.’ Typical of the morning’s exchange of greetings - when approached by the waiter as we entered. We were directed to the counter to order/pay.

Coffee, when it was eventually provided, was good – hot, tasty and, well, coffee; of course it was. Issues? Well ….. we had a train to catch - and whilst a few minutes waiting are expected - we stood then sat at a table across from the counter, looked around, took advantage of the toilets provided in the café – one at a time - easy to find down a narrow passageway, clean too – and continued to wait. A few other people were also hanging around waiting ….. (and, when we eventually fetched our coffees from the counter as our order was called out, we left the café and turned towards the station, and saw more people waiting outside next to the ‘take-away-window’). Ten-minutes wait? That’s being friendly.

It’s not as if the place was heaving with early morning coffee/breakfast clients – it was around half-full; and there were plenty of service people around – friendly to a fault with their shop routines – much of which seemed to be friendly banter one-with-the-other behind the counter. Or, perhaps, there was a snag/blockage/bottle-neck with coffee-making - low output/slow coffee machines? Who knows? Do seated clients – presumably ordering more than a couple of coffees – receive the same slow service? Again, who knows?

For our flat white and café latte we paid A$8 (I think). So, par for the course – value OK.

Complaints ….? Naaaah, but we’ll probably try another local café next time; just to compare things with the Main Street Café and it’s ‘Glacial Coffee-To-Go Services’. It’s obvious – you order coffee-to-go because there’s a time issue - waiting is a constraint; shorter the better.

Oh, and in case you asked/were interested – we had a couple of great tours that day; introduction to Federation Square with the world’s most enthusiastic/knowledgeable guide (from the Melbourne Information Centre). After a quick lunch, we took in the Victoria State Library. You can see Ned Kelly’s (in)famous suit of armour there (well, one of them).

My friends and I met there for our annual catch up. The food was lovely with lots to choose from, and good sized portions. Friendly, good service who didn't kick us out after many hours.
