“Ok Sunday lunch”
Review of The Barrow House

The Barrow House
Ranked #2 of 4 Restaurants in Egerton
Price range: US$10 - US$38
Description: The Barrow House is a pub in Egerton, a village known for its community spirit as much as its magnificent views across the Weald, picturesque cottages and local history. Whether you fancy a quick snack, a light lunch or dinner with friends and family, there's something for everyone on the menu. To wash it all down there are local beers, cask ales and a wide selection of wines by the glass.

Had Sunday lunch here for a friend’s birthday. We were sat at two long tables at the end of the restaurant which had no heating so was very cold. Food was ok but nothing special with a very long wait between mains and dessert possibly due to insufficient staff. Overall enjoyed the meal but not somewhere I would rush back to.

After a meal eaten wearing our coats it was so cold we were then told the xmas menu prices only apply if ordered by more than 6 people. Apparently this is written in the small print somewhere. Not what we have come to expect from The Barrow House where we were eating on a regular basis. We've cancelled the table we had booked for 10 people next week. We have marked service as poor as the waitress could clearly see we were ordering off the discounted xmas menu but did not point out the 6 people requirement. The meals were passable, but the three bird roast was very poor. Very little bird, mostly mash and a very bitter tasting jus.

Popped in last night for a quick supper to introduce a friend to our local, chicken burger and medium rare beef burger, crispy skinny fries, a couple of pints of Harveys, all within an hour, served by attentive cheery staff. Perfect midweek treat for under £25.00.

The pub is quaint and has a good ambience and feel - the staff made us feel welcome and were very friendly.
After receiving a recommendation from our friends who had popped in one day and had pizza we all booked a table to try out more of the menu but it was soon to be a disappointment and each one of us were not happy with some element of the food - we felt it was overpriced and not quality good flavoured food, one of the starters was a crab in deep fried breadcrumbs at £6 for 5 were disappointing, very dry not additional flavours you would expect - the crab bake on the main was overpriced at £15 with no additional quality veg and the Rib eye steaks at £25 a pop was thin no taste and came with a small bowl of prepared bought in chilled chips and some kind of a slaw and that was it, unfortunately and very embarrassing we had to send both steaks back as not what we were expecting for the money - one had fish nchips and I had sea bass which was over cooked and no flavour with the Cool new potatoes..
We are able to visit lots of pubs and restaurants and we would not go back and spend our hard earned money on mediocre food, I understand that their sister pub is in Sissinghurst, not going to try that one either. It was a Friday night and very wet which we were a bit concerned about. Stick to pizza and stay away from the small choice of menu.

First visit after a long time....... we had two truly awful meals here earlier in the year , both with different sets of friends...... the food was poorly cooked and very expensive........ things seem to be improving...the menu looked better....... we only had a drink this time. The staff are always very friendly and attentive and the decor is nice....but the pub lacks atmosphere and can seem sterile. We will try it again for food as our friends say it has improved....
