We stopped here on the recommendation of a friend who does business in the area. Un.be.lievable. Seriously, this was a lunch for the record books.

We showed up a little early for lunch, and while we tried to figure out why there was no menu, the appetizers just kept rolling out of the kitchen. Their prosciutto is incredible. Great house wine. We saw some folks with salami platters, so we asked for some. They brought us a cutting board full of local salami. By the time we got to pasta, we were pretty stuffed. Then they asked us which second piatti we wanted, and they couldn't understand why we didn't want any. We ended up putting down a little, and they offered to bring us more of anything we liked. Then there was dessert and digestives. And coffee. My American friend kept saying, "I feel drunk but on food!" and my Italian husband was grinning from ear to ear.

For the first and second plates, they offer something at the table but have two or more other options they will prepare for you if you'd prefer.

Thank K P

A well appointed trattoria just on the hill outside Castellamonte (TO). There is no menu but there is a lot of food. The antipasti alone is enough for a meal, but no there was a choice of primi and secondi which the waitress will recite to you - oh and also a choice of desserts as well as a very generous cheese tray and of course coffee - with grappa if you wish. The menu changes every day. The meatballs served as one of the many antipasti were as tasty and light as any I've had. You can always ask for more of anything. I recommend you arrive with a hearty appetite. The staff was very congenial and the proprietor even gave us a bottle of local white wine after we had paid. Why? I don't know, maybe she liked a couple of friendly appreciative Americans. The fixed price of this feast was only 25 euros which included a liter of house white wine.

We were looking for a lunch place in the area, and found this trattoria via the good reviews on TripAdvisor. We drove there, and the trip was worth it. Portion sizes were very generous and everything was delicious, all of it for a very good price. We had (on a Sunday) a fixed lunch menu, with a number of appetizers, two primis, two secondis, dessert and coffee, wine and water included for about 30 euros pp.

Some tips
It might be worthwhile to reserve on a Sunday, we had no reservation but they were able to accomodate us. We sat on the outside dining area, nicely shaded.

There is a sign for the restaurant but it it not very well visible (overgrown leaves on it), so we drove past the first time. There is plenty of private parking behind the restaurant.

If you ever travel to the Piedmonte region, do not miss Trattoria Oriente. Every dish was authentic Piedmontese and totally delicious! Try everything, all is served family-style at the table, course after course. My favorites were all really, but I'll start with the eggplant parmesan, very light and so good. Also, assorted cheeses and six types of salumis. Try the potato and sausage mixed sausage and the hot boar sausage and kraut. Also roast rabbit and roasted potatoes were fabulous. There were 2 large baskets of fresh crusty bread on our table of six people, two bottles of wine, one red and one white, both regional and very good, as well as proscuitto and lardon, which both simply melt in your mouth. Of course before the rabbit there were to types of pastas: taggliatelli in a light tomato sauce and ravioli with veal stuffing. Last, but not least was an assortment of dessert. My niece had two; sorbet and taramisu, me just the sorbet. Thank you to our Italian family for this wonderful meal and company and to Trattoria Orientale for such a wonderful culinary experience. We left : Piin como uno ovo! Full as an egg, one and all! Grazie!
