The so called ‘superior’ room was vastly overpriced at nearly £200 per night. We purchased a room for 5 nights at £160 pounds per night through Expedia but a 20% surcharge was added; breakfast for two added a further £20. Normally hotels give discounts for a stay over three nights. Furthermore, the bedroom was in a bad state of repair with ceiling paper hanging loose, grime on the skirting board and mould in the bathroom due to the leaking shower. Our room had no view but overlooked an unkempt courtyard. But worst of all was the noisy fan measuring 60 decibels on my smartphone; this is well above the recommended 30 decibels for bedrooms. After the first night we complained and the receptionist acknowledged it was a problem. It was turned off for two nights yet it was running again on the fourth night so that we could not sleep. We endeavoured to find someone to switch it off but the hotel is dead at night, locked up and no access to any staff. The only way to seek help at night was to contact the absentee owners on two listed phone numbers. Each time I rang I was asked to leave a message – no one ever returned the calls. This is a serious safety issue and the owners have a duty of care to ensure somebody is accessible 24/7. This is a prime requirement of a four star hotel.
However, because of its prime location, the friendly staff and splendid restaurant, a higher rating could be justified if the owners addressed the above issues.

Room tip: Room at the front away from noisy fans

Whilst individual staff were pleasant and helpful and the food was very good at diner the service was poor as was the environment.

The hotel, particularly the public rooms were 'tired' and in need of modernisation. The public bar - which had to be booked was very poor. There wasn't a light in the car park and the ground was very uneven with numerous potholes and therefore a significant trip hazard.

The Reception was not manned after 8pm or before 8 am so requests for service . could not be followed up. Side plates weren't given at breakfast for toast nor a clean knife, though when asked the staff rectified this. Each morning of our stay we had to ask!

I am not at all sure what we paid for as there wasn't any service. Too easy to dismiss this as Covid as other hotels and I have visited five since the end of August managed to be more obliging. Very disappointing.
The gin school was not operating.

4 of our family went to to Gin school. As the only people there, we were given a great afternoon with excellent tuition by Craig. He went through the history and methods of making gin, showed us their small still and then took us into the gin school.
Gins
We distilled our own gins after choosing the botanics, and carefully weighing them out.
After running the still we diluted the gin with water to the desired strength and then bottled it. After that we sealed the bottles with wax.
A full bottle to take away and sample at our leisure. Hopefully each of them will be enjoyable!

Overall and enjoyable afternoon, and we returned fo4 an excellent meal in the evening.

We arrived full of anticipation from the nice reviews. Sat down at a nice table and a lovely view. We ordered our starter and our drinks (our starter being from the side menu, haggis’s bon bons indeed of what’s to offer, as nothing we fancied this came out before our drinks. Ordering our drinks we got a wine menu, nothing else, asked for a pint of Tennents denied, asked for a gin and tonic denied, bragged about how they had 50 Gins on offer, couldn’t of told us one of them but the house gin that was spiced ( we wanted plain), when paying for the bill we noticed 15 gins that were straight up standard gin.
Food was cooked well but over priced and small portions. If you survive the toilets you’ll survive Covid. Enjoy

My partner and I got a gin school experience for Christmas last year. We couldn't use it when we were supposed to due to lockdown but Craig and Noru were very accomodating in allowing us to use it later in the year. We decided to stay at the hotel so we could sample the gin and not worry about driving. It was the best decision we could have made. The hotel and room were great, dinner was fantastic and their covid-19 safety measures meant we felt very safe. Our gin school experience was great. We got 1:1 tuition and Craig walked us through how to distill our very own recipe. We even got to bottle it and take it home.
