We stayed here for 2 nights in late September on a Groupon deal. Having read reviews before we stayed we not expecting much but we were pleasantly surprised. We arrived at 11am, four hours before check in time. Though we could not go to our room, the receptionist encouraged us to do all the paper work so that we would avoid the crush later. The hotel produces a detailed leaflet of 3 different walks from the hotel door. Armed with this we set off through the beautiful countryside and walked along the canal and Middlewood Way.
Our standard room was a little dated as well as windows needed renewing and the switch for bedside lights was out of reach from the bed, but it had a refurbished bathroom and was very clean. The large comfy bed, crisp linen and fluffy towels were of a high quality found in much more expensive hotels. On the first evening our deal included a three course meal and a bottle of wine. The food was very enjoyable and no sign of the supplements mentioned in previous reviews. Four choices for every course. Service and at breakfast was excellent, two very polite young men and friendly ladies. We paid for our evening meal on the second night, lovely food again but disappointing that the menu was identical to the previous evening. The tables were well spaced out as were the seats in the bar. Thought had been given to all the Covid regulations. The hotel markets itself as dog friendly. One evening there were at least three yappy dogs In the bar which I didn’t like but never saw any in the restaurant. An enjoyable stay in a very attractive location at a great price.

We came with low expectations as it was a red letter gift. Therefore we were not too disappointed. The older staff did not come across well particularly at breakfast. However the younger staff were very pleasant and helpful. Excellent starters for the evening dinner. Breakfast was poor quality with few options, even less on second morning as seemed to have run out of many ingredients. A tired hotel in need of refurbishment.
