My wife and I were gifted Lakes Hotels vouchers by the family for our 40th wedding anniversary. Having grown up in Morecambe and watched the slow and sad decline of the old Midland hotel in the 1970s and 1980s, we had promised ourselves that we would return to try the renovated and revamped version one day. We are so glad we did.

We opted for a top floor balcony room for our dinner, bed and breakfast deal, checking in smoothly as soon after the allowed 3pm as was decent. As the weather was being uncharacteristically kind to us, we spent the afternoon sunning ourselves and drinking coffee on the balcony overlooking the calm lapping high tide in the bay with clear views of the Cumbrian fells. The balcony was reached through double patio doors that almost ran the full length of the room, and because of the warm weather we didn't need to close them all night.

We had booked dinner for 7pm, and after sweeping down the evocative and theatrical Deco spiral staircase were shown to a "front row" table in the conservatory, with the welcome warm sun streaming in and reflecting off the bay. Throughout the public areas of the hotel there is a gentle and varied soundtrack of 1920s/30s music, contemporary with the original Midland Hotel's heyday. We found it entirely in keeping with the ambiance and never intrusive. Our meals were superb and beautifully presented. My wife insists that the rhubarb fool was the best dessert she has ever eaten. Breakfast the next morning was similarly excellent with a wide choice and much local produce.

We found our stay to be a total joy. The Midland pulls off a delicate balance between invoking a glamorous bygone era while at the same time providing high modern standards of comfort, facilities and service, without descending into the twee. Morecambe receives much criticism, and some of this is justified, but this criticism stops outside the boundary of the Midland. It is in a separate space-time dimension altogether.

Room Tip: Sea view is a must. Top floor with balconies highly recommended.

We had an overnight stay at The Midland. The deal included dinner, bed and breakfast. We were pleased to find we were in a sea view room even though we hadn’t paid extra for one. As the weather was sunny, being able to overlook the bay was great. Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Had two nights here when I got married in Lancaster Castle. Tip top rooms ... always book a sea facing one ! - and great breakfast. Had drinks in the Rotunda bar before setting off by vintage bus ...the outlook is fantastic (can't quite say that for the rest of Morecambe - and I was born here). Staff are helpful and friendly ... friends also stayed here and were very happy ... I want to come back...

This continues to be an interesting building in a splendid situation. The rooms are slightly quirky, and take some getting used to. We ate dinner twice in the restaurant and thought the food excellent – good ingredients well and imaginatively presented. It was a fine weekend, so both the bar and the terrace outside were far too noisy for decent conversation.
The bedroom curtains are farr from lightproof.

Our second visit to stay with friends at this lovely restored Art Deco hotel.
Excellent, friendly staff, and great food in restaurant.
Well worth splashing out the extra money for a sea-facing room.
Some nice features in the rooms (including a small bottle of milk in the fridge).
Some quirky design in the bedrooms including the toilet hidden away in a 'cupboard'; delightful at first but not quite so amusing at 3 in the morning or when you want a bit more privacy!
Booking for an evening meal in the restaurant is almost always essential if you want to dine at a reasonable time
We will be back.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a sea-facing room
