Spent three nights here with a few friends when planning to climb Snaefell. The hotel is in the centre of Douglas so close to all amenities. It's maybe in need of a wee bit of an update but the rooms were clean and tidy and the staff were friendly and helpful. There is a swimming pool which you can swim in if you're not very tall. It's a weird shape. Main issue was that their restaurant was closed for refurbishment. However there was bar food in the bar. They make a very nice G&T

We spent 3 nights in a Atrium facing room, these rooms are in a good condition and afford you a relaxing stay. The problem was the main restaurant was closed so used Normans bar for 2 evening meals, which was not as good as expected.

Breakfast in the Harris room which was very good and offered a number of options, including Manx Kippers

The Sexton looks lovely from the outside, and in photos, but it is really tired. Public areas are worn and tired and old and drab. Hallways are depressing. Hard to find your way. Best thing here is the atrium, it is lovely. Windows look out at crappy dirty walls, and garbage under stairs. Breakfast was okay, staff were friendly. Rooms large, but bathrooms old and bad. Never got any hot water even after waiting for over 20 minutes, and my friends traveling with me had the same problem.

We stayed with our 8 year old son at this hotel for a few days whilst overseeing repair work to our house.

With an air of Victorian gentility we were not expecting great things, but at almost every turn the Hotel provided standards of service and cleanliness above those which I normally experience.

On arrival, the Car Park is not easy to find and space is extremely limited, but the private entrance (covered) is most welcome. Later we discovered that it is possible to go from the car park to ones room without traipsing through the public areas, which makes a pleasant change. The £4 charge for parking seemed a little steep, until I became aware that is per 24 hour period, with unlimited access and departures.

The check in process was very straight forward, with Zowey being a very personable receptionist. The hotel, being Victorian, can be a bit of a maze and to that end it has three lifts, all colour coded, to take you to the appropriate section of whichever floor you are on. Having a very active 8 year old, and only being accommodated on the 3rd floor, the eight year old elected, every time, to race against the lift (but only if his poor old dad raced with him!). Invariably the stairs were faster!

We had requested a family suite, of which the hotel has three. I suspect the layout hasn't changed since the late 1800's so, if booking these rooms don't expect sea views. The Victorians seemed to favour rooms where the windows opened onto an inner courtyard. The room itself, however, was extremely comfortable. Unlike many modern hotels, where a "family suite" is just a couple of rooms with an interconnecting door, the family suites at the Sefton come with two very large bedrooms, each of which can accommodate two double beds, joined by way of a private corridor with doors at each end for privacy, and a very well appointed bathroom with access only from that corridor. There is also plenty of storage space for a large family looking for an extended stay.

The main restaurant, Harbour Lights, was being refurbished during our stay so we can't pass comment but the less formal dining in the "Noprman Wisdom" restaurant was certainly adequate. My main meal was slightly overdone and a bit tough, however, when mentioned there was no dispute and the cost of that item was removed from the bill without prompting. Breakfast is served in a private, first floor, dining room with excellent sea views and the breakfast was far superior to the one served to us in a 5 star central London hotel a few days earlier.

One of the hidden gems of this hotel is the basement swimming pool. It is the standard 12m, and is attached to a health spa. The pool itself is warm and spotlessly clean and the changing areas are also kept clean, but one wouldn't want to spend to much time there. Although windowless, the temperature almost exactly mirrored the temperature outside which, according to my car, was 6 degrees. Despite that, my son loved it and insisted (again via those stairs!) on visiting it three times in two days.

All three of us agreed that, although not cheap, the Sefton offers good value for money and has successfully combined high end service at a reasonable price. We would all very happily stay there again.

Great escape if you are in an
atrium room with balcony. Would recommend to anyone as it feels like a mini holiday. I stay here usually once a month on business.
Currently renovating one of the restaurants but there is another and also loads of places nextdoor to eat.
