“A bit hit and miss”
Reviewed 28 September 2010

A word of caution - this place is very much a work in progress. The mother and son only took it over earlier this year - their story is told in other reviews. Unfortunately on our visit the negatives probably outweighed the positives, which was a shame because I really do believe that in a year or two from now this place will be a real gem. At the moment it has a very dated look and feel. Our party had a double en-suite room which was quite small, I had a single room without an en-suite which was dis-proportionately large. Also putting a single room next door to a double when the walls are quite thin is a mistake, as I had to endure the couple in the double room indulge in sexual activity each morning! Luckily the activity didn't last too long - but was a bit embarrassing and off putting for a single visitor. The carpet in my single room was very grubby and stained. The toilets were some yards away and suffered from the very old, very inefficient Victorian plumbing, which meant that in most cases you were greeted with someone elses "deposits" when using the toilet! I never used the shower room, which looked equally old and uninviting.

On a positive note - the communal areas are bright and inviting, the breakfast was especially good, the owner was a little too apologetic when things went wrong - as an example - the toaster was prone to jamming and we were told that it would get replaced when higher priorities had been addressed, I would have thought that to get down to the local Asda or tesco and buy a couple of cheap toasters was not going to break the bank, especially when on the weekend we were there the place was pretty much full to capacity.
Another positive is the off street parking, a real asset for a place in this very busy area.

I really hope that the current owners can press ahead with their plans to make all rooms en-suite as soon as possible and also consider the siting of rooms.
We will use the George again - it is cheap and at some point in the future will, I hope be cheerful!

This Mum and son just setting out with lots of work to do on the hotel and with the right attitude to make it a success. So friendly and helpful. In spite of needing refurbishment, it is still an excellent place to stay, clean, comfortable and a delightful walk into the beach and shopping area of Weymouth (especially welcome after a day sitting in the car). Good value for money and fab breakfasts.

This Hotel featured on To Buy Or Not To Buy and my partner and I could recall the programme!!! Lovely owner whose son cooks the most tasty breakfasts ever <yum yum>. Lots yet to do but the heart is with this Mum and son to do it!Great location and a lovely building. This place needs visitors to make it work for Mum and son and I would wholeheartedly say - stay there. I really hope lots of people stay as this is a potential jewel in the crown.

My family and I stayed at the George in August, the hotel is a short walk from the sea front. The hotel has ample parking and we were grateful of this as the town was full of holiday makers. The room we stayed in had a four poster bed and lovely views of the large rear garden. We had our own en-suite with plenty of clean towels. The room was serviced daily with fresh towels and our tea tray was replenished on our return. The lounge has a large television, which the girls were able to watch when required. The breakfast was probably the best we have ever had in a hotel, a proper english breakfast that kept us going all day. We will definatly stay here again next time we are in Weymouth.
