A word of caution - this place is very much a work in progress. The mother and son only took it over earlier this year - their story is told in other reviews. Unfortunately on our visit the negatives probably outweighed the positives, which was a shame because I really do believe that in a year or two from now this place will be a real gem. At the moment it has a very dated look and feel. Our party had a double en-suite room which was quite small, I had a single room without an en-suite which was dis-proportionately large. Also putting a single room next door to a double when the walls are quite thin is a mistake, as I had to endure the couple in the double room indulge in sexual activity each morning! Luckily the activity didn't last too long - but was a bit embarrassing and off putting for a single visitor. The carpet in my single room was very grubby and stained. The toilets were some yards away and suffered from the very old, very inefficient Victorian plumbing, which meant that in most cases you were greeted with someone elses "deposits" when using the toilet! I never used the shower room, which looked equally old and uninviting.
On a positive note - the communal areas are bright and inviting, the breakfast was especially good, the owner was a little too apologetic when things went wrong - as an example - the toaster was prone to jamming and we were told that it would get replaced when higher priorities had been addressed, I would have thought that to get down to the local Asda or tesco and buy a couple of cheap toasters was not going to break the bank, especially when on the weekend we were there the place was pretty much full to capacity.
Another positive is the off street parking, a real asset for a place in this very busy area.
I really hope that the current owners can press ahead with their plans to make all rooms en-suite as soon as possible and also consider the siting of rooms.
We will use the George again - it is cheap and at some point in the future will, I hope be cheerful!
