“Wonderful”

Wonderful stay

We enjoyed a five night stay here as a convenient base in which to take a holiday break with grandchildren.

The accommodation is charming and quirky - in a very positive sense, much of the original structure of the former railway station having been carefully retained through the award winning renovation. For example, the serving hatches through which travel tickets would have been sold are still in place between what are now the sitting room and hall and kitchen. Part of the former platform serves as a rear private courtyard. There are photographs and other interesting information on hand about the premises when it was a functional railway station.

The premises are decorated, furnished and flitted to a high standard and a stay here is extremely comfortable. We needed nothing additional during our stay. The owners live in an adjacent property and are on hand should any problem arise. We experienced a minor plumbing problem (that could occur in any home) and the owner resolved this very speedily. There is ample free parking.

There is a variety of attractions both in the town of Tavistock and surrounding areas and there must be something to suit everyone. Tavistock is a charming and quiet place, though we did find that few restaurants remained open in the evening.

There are two things to be aware of. Firstly, the premises are located at a higher level in Tavistock town necessitating a downhill walk to the centre and shops (only about 5 minutes) and an uphill walk (several minutes longer – depending) to return. The walk is quite steep and would not suit everyone, though there is plenty of (reasonably priced) parking in the town for anyone who might prefer to use a car. Secondly, on the upper floor of the premises there is one very low door and a low beam in both bedrooms. Both are clearly marked and the owner warned us of them on arrival, but I imagine that most, like both of us did, are bound to bang their heads at least once. This might not suit a giant.

We had a very enjoyable stay, and would readily return to this accommodation when next visiting this area.

“Great cottage”
Reviewed 18 September 2016 for a stay in September 2016

We really enjoyed our 4 night stay here. The conversion has been completed really well providing comfortable accommodation but leaving the shell of the station buildings intact. Steps provide easy access into town, if a little steep on return! This is also right by the very pretty walk along the viaduct.
Local attractions worth visiting include Lydford Gorge and Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre.
Also love the great restaurants in Tavistock.

Liked best: The beutiful conversion of the old station buildings
Liked least: The low beams upstairs - kept banging our heads. Unavoidable given the conversion but worth noting for taller travellers.

“Quiet, comfortable and good location”
Reviewed 9 May 2016 for a stay in April 2016

This accommodation is well located near the centre of Tavistock with parking for a couple of cars. Tavistock is a good base for exploring Dartmoor and other nearby attractions. The cottage is well equipped with modern appliances. It is quiet, warm (the weather was cool when we were there), and the beds comfortable. It is a short (though steep) walk down the hill to the town centre. The hosts Jenny and Colin are pleasant and helpful.

“A superb property”
Reviewed 16 July 2013 for a stay in July 2013

It was a privilege to stay in this wonderful property in a stunning location. The owners have restored the old station sympathetically to provide modern, comfortable accommodation and their attention to detail made our stay even more special. We were personally welcomed and shown round our holiday home. Food and drink essentials were waiting for us. We will look forward to our next stay
