This is a National Trust property and it shows how the house was 90 years ago when it was sold to the Chairman of Shell Oil and also the furnihings painting and china which were added since - although the entry is by timed ticket you are allowed to explore the house at your leisure

The house itself is not very attractive. However, its position and terraced gardens are wonderful. The main attraction inside is the collection of old masters. Not much in the way of furniture.

I visited Upton five years ago and was very impressed. It had some interesting furniture and interiors, a wonderful art collection and attractive gardens.

Visiting again last week, it was disappointing. In an attempt to ring the changes, a lot of the furniture had been removed to make the house appear that it was for sale. Other rooms were divided to show how they were before the alterations of the 1930s. To be honest, this just appeared to be a gimmick which made the house seem rather sad and tired, and highlighted the fact that a great deal of money needs to be spent on the fabric and decoration - a jolly good clean (especially of the windows) would go some way towards cheering the place up - particularly upstairs, which is totally cheerless and felt neglected.

This semi-emptiness coupled with a garden renovation seems extremely bad timing. Of course gardens and ponds need overhauls every few years, that's unavoidable, but this coupled with the sad atmosphere of the house does not make for a pleasant visit.

On the plus side, most of the stunning art collection is still displayed and the Pavilion Restaurant is still serving very good food.

Hopefully, next year things will be back to normal.

It was such lovely weather last Friday that we decided to go to Upton House and explore the gardens. What a lovely time we had just pottering about. The mirror lake looks as if it will be a very special feature when it fills up.The grounds are kept in an immaculate condition - obviously whoever cares for them really does 'care'. Thank you Upton for such a wonderful afternoon, I would recommend it to anyone.
