Convento de Alpendurada
Reviewed 1 August 2016

We visited as part of a large group for dinner. The convent has been beautifully restored and furnished and the views are lovely. However, despite the copious wine, the meal was rather mundane and uninspired!

We only visited this Hotel (as part of a tour) for dinner but the views were amazing and the building intriguing. The whole site and the hotel seems to have been restored to a very high standard. It seems that this location might also be hired for a wedding.

I stayed here two nights for a wedding and I have mixed feeling about the experience. The good part: located approx. at one hour drive from Porto, the landscape and view of the hills and river are great. The building and grounds are old, but relatively well maintained in the common areas, of which there are plenty. Lots of inside space to lounge, plenty of sofas and cosy corners. The internal courtyard is also very nice and the wedding reception was served there, on elegantly set tables. The food and drinks served for the reception were very good. The whole event run smoothly.

The less good part: I was surprised by the fact that the room was only 60 Euro per night, but once I saw it, I understood why. The "double" bed was more a large single bed and the rest of the furniture was old, musty and very much used. The bathroom was even worse, with ancient taps and a horrid plastic curtain for the shower. The shower itself could hardly be used. The room was not made and the waste basket not emptied during the two and half days we were there. In fact, there were no chambermaids to be seen anywhere. The food served for breakfast was minimalistic (some ham, cheese, bread, a few cookies). Finally, even if it was boiling hot, I carefully avoided the pool, because there were no filters and the water looked dirty - also, local youth were using it, since the grounds are not fenced.

Conclusion: this place is wonderful, but huge, in need of a lot more staff and maintenance. The few staff members we saw were helpful and did a huge amount of work to keep everything going. However, as a bare minimum, the rooms should be redecorated (at least the bathrooms) and some additional staff would make the stay more comfortable. As a hotel/resort it would not get more than one star for the ancient room, terrible bathroom, total lack of housekeeping, poor quality of food for breakfast and dirty pool. As a whole package, inclusive of excellent food for dinner, beautiful common areas and hard-working staff it gets up to average.

PS: internet available only in the reception area and the airco did not work

We didn't stay in the hotel but came for dinner with a group of friends. The building is gorgeous and I imagine it is a great place to stay. The views from the terraces and all rooms are stunning. Our meal was delicious but not adventurous. We had a very pleasant evening.

We had dinner in the old hotel, formerly a monastery. Drinks on the terrace outside before wandering through the sumptuously decorated rooms to the dining room. Hand painted blue tiles adorn many walls and chestnut ceilings complete the grandeur.
Great iron chandeliers provide the light.
The service was excellent and the food simple and tasty. Wine good value.
Bedrooms are converted from the old cells. Altogether a hidden gem
