“A nice hotel which did not meet our expectations”
Reviewed 5 March 2012

The hotel was built in 1903, and is nicely decorates and furnished in the fashion of that era. The bedrooms are large and airy, and the mattresses comfortable, not so the bedding which comprised blankets, which, when interleaved to fit a super-sized bed became heavy.
We were happy to 'dress' for dinner as this maintained the ambiance, the dinner was a five course affair, and was substantial, though perhaps quality was second place to quantity. I ordered a Beaujolais for £29 thinking they had a 'find', no such luck, it turned out to be a basic tired Beaujolais; that was taking 'markup' several stages too far!. Breakfast again was a substantial affair of somewhat higher quality. Overall the service was excellent which makes a grumpy head water at breakfast stand out: telling off a waitress in the midst of diners is not good form.
One of the reasons for visiting this hotel was its Spa. This was delightfully lit and decorated. it was however small, the sauna would fit five very close friends, three /four people could swim in the pool, and the Jacoozi, which was not working, was about two metres in diameter. The brochure does not tell you that this facility is shared with the the 3 Star sister hotel next door, so what was acceptable in November might may not be so in the season.

We have just come back from 2 nights at the Victoria. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Friendly staff. Peter showed us to our room & told us about the facilities of the hotel.
Breakfast was very good. Dinner was very tasty, but we could have done with slightly larger portions. We are all in favour of the hotel having a gentlemen's dress code of tie and jacket. Made a real event of dining.

We had a standard room, which was big enough with plenty of storage space. it was one of the cleanest rooms that we have ever stayed in. The cleaning staff has a very professional air to them, with uniforms rather than the standard jeans and a t-short. The en-suite was good sized and was very bright with lots of shelf space. The room was warm and very quiet.

Apart from the portion size mentioned above, only 2 relatively small criticisms. Some of the staff did not have too much English & it could be difficult getting them to understand questions. On Saturday the band playing in the sun lounge was far too loud to be able to have an easy conversation in the main lounge, but this is probably just our taste.

It was quite noticeable from the way that staff spoke to them that many of the guests had been coming for years, which says something out the hotel.

If the Victoria is typical of the Brend chain, then we are looking forward to visiting some of their other hotels in the north of Devon.

Room Tip: Probably not a good idea to have a room above the sun lounge n a Saturday night.

We have just come back from 2 nights for our honeymoon. It was a lovely hotel and the staff were all friendly. We had a sea view room with a balcony and the views were great.

We stayed two nights 13-15-Feb 2012, we opted for the sea view room which was very nice however it was opposite the cleaners work station and therefore a little noisy early in the morning. I spoke reception and they moved us, rather luckily for us to one of the suites, which was excellent. The service was without fault, quick polite friendly excellent in every area of the hotel. We only ate lunch at the hotel - my wife only eats white meat - the food we did have was to a very high standard, great breakfast as well served to you rather than the buffet style which was great I thought. They even had redbush tea which is first for a UK hotel well done them. The drinks weren't overly expensive either. I would say it has an older clientele All in all a luxury hotel with excellent service and a timeless atmosphere.

My husband and I recently had a wonderful weekend at this lovely hotel. The staff were absolutely fantastic from check in to check out and nothing was too much trouble. When I booked I was asked whether either of us had any dietary requirements and as my husband is wheat intolerant this is very important to us. Everything was in place when we arrived at the restaurant and the waiter was so helpful telling my husband what was available to eat etc and making sure that he didn't go without or hungry! All the staff were wonderful and smiled throughout our stay making the whole experience very enjoyable. The hotel itself is a fabulous Victorian example of splendour with comfortable and magnificent furniture. Our room overlooked the sea and was more than adequate for the two of us with a moderate sized en-suite, all very clean, comfortable and decorated beautifully throughout. The food was also fantastic, very flavoursome and more than enough to eat. All the food was cooked to perfection and beautifully served. The hotel also has a swimming pool and spa but unfortunately we didn't get chance to enjoy this on this occasion. It might have been an extravagant weekend but it was all well worth it and would certainly stay again. The only down side was the terrible internet connection which certainly needs updating. Thoroughly recommended hotel.

Room Tip: Seaview to get the best of the location
