One of the best museums we’ve visited. Superb displays of excavated and restored Viking ships dating back to 834 AD. Complemented by a splendid interactive film shown on the surrounding walls telling you the Viking story. There is a comprehensive display in the museum of artefacts. A visit to enhance your knowledge of the Viking era and well reached by the Bygdøy ferry from Oslo City Hall Pier. Take in the nearby Polarship Fram Museum, Kon-Tiki Museum, Norse Folkemuseum and Norwegian Maritime Museum for a full day out in Oslo. All well recommended.

The Viking Ship Museum in Oslo is worth the trek out from the city center. The small museum is packed with history, artifacts found with the ships in the burial mounds, and 3 beautiful and well preserved Viking ships. There's a short video that plays every 15-20mins that is unique and shown on the ceiling!

We bought tickets at the door, and you also get entry into the Historical Museum with your admission. There are no bags/backpacks allowed inside (small purses ok) but you can rent a locker to store your possessions while you tour.

This museum is another must see in Oslo. It holds some viking ships which have been well preserved as well as carts and tools that were found. How the Vikings travelled so far on these tiny boats beats me.

Unfortunately I didn't have time to visit the Kon Tiki exhibition which is across the road.

If you only go one place in Oslo, make it the Viking Ship museum! Three whole ships, incredibly well preserved given their age, and a lot of artifacts. A nice 15 minute film describes the Viking exploration. Educational, unique, Nicole laid out. If you are downtown in Oslo the best way to get there is just to buy a ferry ticket at Pier 3 - “Ferry to Museums” - it’s a 15 minute ride across the river and a short walk through a beautiful old residential neighborhood up to the Viking Ship Museum.

This is a number one attraction for me in Oslo. It is a poem in wood. The ships are so beautiful that picture does not explain the full glory of the remarkable craftsmanship. The have a great clip accompanying the exhibition as well as other obectsfound with these ships.
