Owner description: The Tromsø Cable Car was built in 1961 by Brødrene Jakobsens Rederi, a local shipping company that was a major player in Arctic hunting/trapping, fishing and expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. The gondolas proudly convey this tradition by bearing the shipping company’s symbols: the polar bear and the seal. The Cable Car runs from Solliveien in Tromsdalen up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen. The lower station is located on Tromsø’s mainland, 50 m above sea level, while the upper station, Fjellstua, is situated at an altitude of 421 m above sea level. The trip up takes just four minutes. The Cable Car is Tromsø’s most popular tourist destination. From the large outdoor terrace, you can enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of Tromsø and the virtually endless sight of islands, fjords, mountains and the open sea. If you look in the other direction, you will see the majestic mountain Tromsdalstinden, which towers 1,238 m above sea level. In summer, the panorama deck at the upper station provides excellent opportunities of seeing the Midnight Sun, while in winter it’s an ideal place for hunting the magical Northern Lights. Welcome to the Tromsø Cable Car – proud supplier of views since 1961

The view from the top provides a panoramic view of the city of Tromso, when the skies are clear, i.e. not foggy, snowing, etc.
Some people bring their skis & others even do paragliding from the top of the mountain.

Fantastic view of Tromso --helps put the whole place in perspective. Probably worthwhile having the correct footwear as in the winter months walking around on the icy surface at the top can be quite challenging if not very dangerous

A simple self excursion from the town centre...catch the bus or walk......a ride in the cable car and then stunning views. We were really lucky with the weather and the views were amazing. Been here in the Summer and in the Winter...both worth it. What is great is that the cable car runs till 23.00 hrs....so you can see the town at night....and maybe the Northern lights as well!

It will be worth your while to take the cable car to the top of this little mountain...the view of tromso ia great and if you do it at night during the winter months and you are lucky to have a clear sky it is a great spot to see the aurora borealis from. You can take the bus or walk your way from tromso. I was staying in the center of the city in tromso and walked all the way up to the cable car station. From the city centre expect to walk more or less 40 minutes. It is an enjoyable walk and you will walk by the arctic cathedral as well!

Only a short ride but worth it for the views over Tromso. From the station at the top you are able to wander around to get views in all directions although you do need to be fairly mobile and steady on your feet as you will be on ice. We went up quite early and were unable to get any refreshments as the café had not opened up.
