“Amazing place!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 January 2012

My partner and I stayed here last week 13th Jan 2012 for two nights. Lovely hotel, very stylish and clean. First impressions were the staff, nice to see a smiley, happy face, very friendly and chatty, we booked in but we forgot to ask for a non smoking room. We were shown to our room by a lady I believe was Winney Ly, may have spelt this wrong, as soon as we walked in we realised our mistake and explained that we wanted a no smoking room, to which we were taken to reception, no fuss and they were very happy to change our room. Wow, were we lucky, we had one of the roof top suites No 701, amazing, could not find fault. The beds were so comfy, great view out over the city and so quiet, with such a central location. Checked out the sauna and steam room which were very modern and clean, but we had so much to see we didn't get chance to try out. The staff were very helpful. booking tables for us and staff at the bar were friendly too.
I hope to return to Vienna again, so much we didn't get to see, I would hope that my stay would be at The Ring. Could honestly not find fault.

Room Tip: Make sure you state whether you want a smoking or non smoking room

The hotel is wonderfully located - steps from all the major attractions. The rooms are beautiful and spacious - I had the X-ordinary which may have accounted for the larger size. And of course the Molton Brown toiletries were awesome.

I did not have any interaction with the staff - there is no concierge service and I did not find the staff to be overly welcoming. Reading back through the past reviews, it appears that other reviewers received a different experience - room upgrades and extras in the room - I definitely did not experience this. My room was on the first floor and although the windows opened to the street the noise from the tram was intolerable.

Lastly, there is a thermostat in the room but it does not adjust - it is fixed on a temperature and it cannot be changed. Seems insignificant but the room was very warm at night and made for difficult sleeping conditions.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher level.

Dear 'MarianneF', thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Happy to read that you liked the location, the rooms etc. As to our staff, they are acting pretty 'casual' so I am just wondering what exactly you are aiming at? Other reviews do seem to be OK.......anyhow, I am looking forward welcoming you again in the near future.....where you will stay in a room where the thermostat has been adjusted. Best regards

Very professional, friendly, no fuss service. Room very comfortable with a roof window, super cosy with lots of space. I don't particularly mind the separate toilet without a sink, it's almost the norm around this part of the world. Bathroom could have been a little more welcoming, instead of the industrial minimalist style, mind you, it had a lot of storage space and easy to keep clean I guess.
Adjacent restaurant has wonderful food, quite fussy though. Bar also serves more casual meals. Lovely old elevator.

Only complaint is the noisy air con that seemed to be impossible to turn off, even after asking advise from the front desk. Why do hotels even bother with systems that are complicated, when all you need is a simple on/off button?

Dear 'flowerchat 1', such a great review! Happy to read that you loved this place, we do as well! As to the 'noisy air con', we cannot turn this off by just pushing the 'off button' as this is a general air con sytem, which would mean that we would have no air con at the entire hotel.....but we are working on it.....best regards

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 December 2011

We stayed in The "X-ordinary" room at 350 Euro per night, for 3 nights in December 2011.

We research hotels and cities a lot prior to a vacation, and 'The Ring' seemed to attract high scores and positive reviews - however, we did not have this experience; The hotel was underwhelming and vastly overpriced.

Some weeks prior to check-in, I had personally emailed the hotel requesting a slightly early check in (around 11.30am) and a smoking room. They had advised me that, although they could not guarantee this, they would do their best to accommodate.

Upon arrival - I was bluntly told there were no rooms available yet, rooms wouldn't be ready until 2pm and that I should just wait until then to check-in.
To me, this is not doing best to accommodate. I put across to the receptionist that they were doing nothing to try and help and instead of proposing solutions, she was argumentative, rude, un-welcoming and un-helpful.
To make matters worse, the other receptionist kept interrupting and shouting across the counter to me, also being rude and argumentative.

As this was going on, people checking into the 'Casual' rooms at 100 Euro per night, were being shown straight to their rooms. I was paying 350 Euro per night and being made to wait until 2pm?

It took lots of strong words, and requesting to speak to the manager, before miraculously a room became available for me (a non-smoking room) which we could use until the smoking room was ready.
This was perfectly acceptable to me - I couldn't understand why this wouldn't have been offered in the first place? - why did we need to have a disagreement and ask to speak to the manager for this to happen?
(Actually, I proposed this solution to start with and the response was - "we don't do that, why should a maid have to clean a room twice?")

The 'X-ordinary' rooms themselves are large, well decorated, but quite sparse.
There are lovely views over the Viennese Ringstrasse, and the location is great to walk into the centre for shops, to nearby sights etc. Everything was very well decorated for Christmas.
The room has lots of storage, large wardrobes etc - The bathroom is modern with lovely Molten Brown toiletries. The shower room has underfloor heated tiles, which are beautiful to walk on! The bed was super comfortable - lovely nights sleep.

However, there are these downsides to the rooms:
A can of coke is 5 Euro - (N.B: there is a 'Spar' 6 doors along.)
Breakfast is 26 Euro per person - for Juice, Coffee, Croissant and a Boiled Egg
Coffee is 6 Euro, and a Fruit Salad 10 Euro!
The room service menu is small and un-inspiring.

I know everyone isn't going to Vienna to watch TV- but after a days exploring, it's nice to relax in bed with a bit of TV...
The TV channels were awful, there was 1 English TV channel BBC News that kept stalling.
It cost 18 Euro to watch a movie - for example 'Jurassic Park' - probably about 18 years old now!
To rent a DVD player (which we felt we had to as there was nothing else on the TV) was 15 Euro per day - there was even problems with this as it didn't work, couldn't be set up etc etc - we eventually had to have a new TV on a separate desk wheeled to the room at 11.10pm.
(On a positive note: We weren't charged for the first day's DVD rental as it wasn't working for us)

On check-out, a different receptionist was very apologetic for the problems we had at the start, and hoped we had still had a good trip etc.
All in all, quite an un-inspiring hotel, very overpriced for what they offer, and i'm sorry to say I wouldn't recommend it. I think there are a lot better hotels out there in Vienna.

Room Tip: I don't think the 'X-ordinary' rooms are worth the extra money.

Dear 'CharlesForde', thank you for your review, much appreciated. I do agree with a few points as to your review when it comes to our services in general, but I must tell you that we are not overpriced....actually guests who would like to visit the 'Spar' are not the guests we are aiming at. For all services that we should have paid attention to and which have not been up to your expectations I deeply do apologize, this can and will not happen again. Nevertheless I am looking forward welcoming you again@The Ring, Vienna's Casual Luxury Hotel to proof that we can do better....

We spent Christmas '10 in Vienna at this hotel and everything was perfect. They even provided us with a tiny tree, assorted cookies and citrus fruits on Christmas morning. The staff was very attentive and helpful for directional and language challenged tourists like ourselves.
