This hotel isn’t for everyone. It’s not modern cookie cutter. It’s very charming and in a great location. Breakfast was okay and same with staff. The room was very charming. The bathroom was very clean. The pullout mattress was hard as a rock and the pillows definitely need to be replaced. You can tell they are very old and extremely flat. They will store your luggage if you check out but don’t need to leave the area yet. We would stay here again as it’s clean, charming and in the perfect location! Loved Vienna!!!

My wife and I booked this hotel for the start and end of our month stay in Austria. The staff was great, location great.breakfast the best.We had to ask for a different room each time which they did,no problem. The courtyard needed to access rooms looked into a parking lot complete with dumpsters. This looks like it last saw paint in 1950.The bathrooms were remodeled. The rooms are quite dated!! Old wallpaper, peeling paint, old faded, stained carpet. Furniture also from 1950. Old can be charming and nice but this looked old and dated. My wife called it The Bates Motel.
As I said, they did correct our issues, which I appreciated. If I could I would choose another hotel.

Room tip: Pick another hotel,if the quality of the room alone is important.

There is a maxim which reads ‘Location, location, location!’. That is where this small hotel scores loads of brownie points to offset any negative aspects. More of that later.

First impressions are usually based on expectations and our initial reaction to arriving at the Pertschy was of a degree of ‘tiredness’ and a need for the carpets to be replaced – they were best described as rather threadbare (but clean). However, after our first 24 hours, it grew on us, especially as we began to appreciate more about the history of the building, which dates back to at least the 1720s. The present owners have run this former Cavriani Palace since 1964.

The rooms have high ceilings and all floors of the building are serviced be a lift (or elevator). Our brochure described it as having ‘a romantic inner courtyard’, though there is little to support this description since the courtyard is used purely as a staff car park, accessed through two grand wooden doors from the narrow street. The hotel is classified as being 4*, but we would rate it as somewhere between 3 and 4*. The hotel boasts that 99% of its rooms – there are 55 rooms in total – are ‘accessible’, but that is questionable based on our experience as we had booked 4 rooms for 4 couples in their 60s and 70s. For example, some of the bathrooms were a bit cramped, so much so that the guests had to be contortionists to sit on a loo that was too close to the bathroom sink! Moreover, the step up to our shower was about a foot high which my wife found difficult.

Our bedroom was a good size and very well lit. There were good, modern facilities and fittings, including a hair drier and room safe. None of rooms had air conditioning but each was provided with an electric fan, though this was ineffective in keeping the room cool, even in September, 2018. There was plenty of shelf and hanging space for clothes. We did not find the bed terribly comfortable, I’m afraid. A refreshments tray was not provided in the bedroom, but ‘free’ coffee could be accessed all day in the hotel lobby by guests.

I have to say that the hotel staff are truly excellent. They spoke perfect English and went out of their way to be helpful and accommodating. They guided us to the local attractions and gave clear directions. Guests can ask them just about anything and they always do their very best to provide satisfaction, no matter what the query might be.

The hotel provides a good breakfast but does not offer evening meals. However, there are so many restaurants fairly close by. There is a fast and reliable Wi-Fi connection which is free to guests.

So, back to the location. The hotel is in the centre of this wonderful city and is located on Habsburgergasse which leads to the right onto the impressive pedestrianised street called Graben. That, in turn leads to St Stephen’s Cathedral Square so the distance from the hotel to the Cathedral is only about 200 metres at the most. Sitting in the Graben at one of the outdoor restaurant spaces for a drink, a snack or a delicious ice cream sundae was a popular pastime for many, day and night, just for the purpose of people watching! The underground station is also close by and it is not all that far – perhaps a mile (?) - to walk to the river and canal. There are lovely shops on the Graben, on Habsburgergasse and its neighbouring streets too.

Exiting the hotel to the left takes you after a very short walk to the famous Spanish Riding School entrance, the Hofburg Palace and the Museums District. The grand Hofburg Palace is the official residence of the President of Austria. It is well worth a visit as it is the documented seat of government and was historically the imperial winter residence, whereas the beautiful Schönbrunn Palace was the summer residence.
We found that the best way for our group to get around was either on foot (for the fitter ones) or by using the hop on, hop off buses. We found that the stop at the Opera House was the most convenient for us and was not too far to walk. These buses offer a good means to see the principal highlights and landmarks of the city in reasonable comfort with good commentaries.

In summary, the Pertschy Hotel is perfectly located for the independent traveller and, in spite of a relatively few negative comments I have made, we would not hesitate to stay there again to sample the delights of this under-rated city.

This was our second stay at Pertschy. We would stay there again! We had lovely friendly receptionists this time - how very nice. Breakfast is delightful - as was the breakfast staff. You simply cannot beat this hotel for location if you want to be in the Innere Stadt and close to EVERYTHING including the S-bahn at Stephansdom. Our small room had no aircon - fantastic! We slept with our windows open and were woken every morning at 7 by the cathedral bells. Beds were dead comfortable and a tiny bathroom, completely functional. Very comfortable and delicious free tea and coffee ad lib in the foyer. I would stay there again. If you get claustrophobic, be sure to ask for a street facing room and not a courtyard room, although these rooms are bigger! Thanks again Pertschy!
