This restaurant was in walking distance of our hotel, and as it was raining we didn't want to walk further into the city to eat. We were glad we went in. The waiting staff were very pleasant and not pushy. It was very reasonably priced and the food great. We went again the following night and the waiter recognised us, remembered what we wanted and gave us a complimentary drink on the house. Would have gone there again, but we had a meal package with the concert we had booked. Well recommended.

One of the great pleasures for visitors walking the neighborhood streets of Vienna is coming across restaurants that cater mainly to the locals. Such were the circumstances when we came upon Toni’s Taverne.

From the appearance of the front door this restaurant looked promising. Placed prominently at the entrance was a sign accrediting the restaurant to the Chaine de Rotisseurs – a positive indicator that good food was to be had inside.

In a word, however, no. A lunch-time fixed menu priced at less than 10 euros definitely offered good value: a bean soup (very good) followed by grilled white fish with boiled potatoes and a lettuce salad on the side. The latter two dishes, however, were awful. The fish was a little over cooked but much worse was the fact that it was swimming in so much butter that it was inedible. Similarly the salad was drenched in a sugar and vinegar dressing – nice if used sparingly but here there was so much of it here that the salad was also ruined. Not helping the whole situation very much was forgettable décor and a surly waitress. It was tempting to send it back to the kitchen but time was pressing.

We must have caught Toni and his crew on a bad day since the food we were served was nothing close to the standards of the Chaine de Rotisseurs. That and the fact that there are so many better restaurants in Vienna mean that it’s unlikely we’ll make a return visit.
