If you get the chance (and patience) go see a concert or a ballet even if you have no place to seat. Just the outside of the building makes you feel the importance ot this place.

We went to see Faust by Gounod at the State Opera, it was THE main reason for our visit and we had bought tickets on-line from England. There is a cool internet chat room where you can talk directly to someone at the Opera when buying tickets, very easy.

It is, as I am sure anyone knows, one of the Opera houses of the world, which is why we attended and were not disappointed.
The single best, and simplest feature for us, was the mini screens in front of every seat which translate for you in real time, what is being sung. We found this invaluable, and crucial if you do not know the story (you are watching) inside out.

If you can afford it, everyone should go to the opera at least once, and this is the place to do it!

Pleasant tour but difficult to hear the guide as the english speaking group was large. She gave us good information on getting last minute opera tickets which was so helpful to us. I liked seeing the set backstage and watching the backgrounds being lowered in the light of day to better understand how it all came together.

the interior is sumptuous and beautiful. Have a glass of champagne before and/or during a performance and enjoy the interior as well as the stylish Austrians.

What better place to see your first opera than in Vienna? My friend and I got the cheapest tickets to a Sunday evening performance of "Falstaff", and the seats were just fine and the opera was outstanding. The building is beautiful inside and I was able to meander around during the intermission. Be sure to dress appropriately - most patrons I saw were in suits or dresses.
