“Excellent Hotel Close to Harbour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2011

We spent a week at this hotel and really enjoyed the stay. The rooms were immaculate, very spacious and very clean. The location is a 10 minute walk from the Harbour. The hotel pools are very clean and spacious. The breakfast menu was very varied and good value for money with very helpful staff. The staff at reception were helpful but struggled a bit with English, I guess they were placed there to cater more for the numerous german guests at the hotel. Each room has a private patio area. The evening buffet at the hotel is a bit pricey at 55 lira so we decided to eat out. However, we ate at the sister hotel (Oscar hotel) which is located next door on a few occasions and the buffet was great. The Oscar hotel has also got a spa which can be used by residents of the Vuni Palace hotel as they are under the same ownership. Overall we had a great time at the hotel. The back drop mountain views from the hotel are great and the atmosphere surrounding the hotel is very peaceful.

We used this hotel for the second week of our visit to North Cyprus expecting it to be better than our first week in a 4 star, no way. The service here was shocking, the staff are surly and unfriendly, there is not enough of them to keep a hotel of this size running smoothly. Three times during the week we were there, we had to put the do not disturb sign on the door as the rooms had not been serviced by 4.30 pm and we wanted a shower and to get ready to go out to the harbour for something to eat. Several times in the week when we went for the buffet breakfast at around 9.00 a.m. the containers for the fruit were empty, there was no yoghurt and we had to wait at least 15 mins before a member of staff brought out fresh. One morning when this happened there seemed to be only one member of staff refilling the cold buffet and cooking eggs and omlettes to fill the hot buffet. The food itself was edible but the hot buffet was not good, we lived on fried eggs and houlmi cheese most of the week. The rooms were spacious with 2 queen beds in each, the furniture was scratched and the wardrobe doors refused to slide. The balcony was never mopped and was grubby as was the furniture. The bathroom had seen better days, silicone sealant was visible on all the cracks and crevices. The power shower was good. The outside area was good, plenty of sunbeds and the pool was enormous. The beach area was good, the brochure stated a pebble beach but there was plenty of sand ideal for children. There didn't appear to be much entertainment this may have been because it was late on in the season. The prices in this hotel were astronomical, an example a tuna salad at our previous hotel, the harbour and local restaurants was 12 TL in the hotel 20TL. Drinks were twice the price and the staff wondered why no-one was buying them. The indoor pool, fitness centre was out of bounds as a result of a flood in February this year, for reasons best know to the management they had not had these repaired but were building a new block of rooms at the side of the main building. All in all for a 5 star hotel it was rubbish and we certainly wouldn't entertain going there again. For a decent meal we walaked 10 minutes up the road to where the street met the main road to a little place called Alestra, their kebaps and their sirloin steak were to die for and so reasonably priced, the steak was 20TL and came with salad and proper cyprus chips yummy.

Have just returned from a week at Vuni Palace and will certainly not be returning. On arrival we were offered four different rooms none of which were the sea view room we had paid for but the attitude of the staff was such that we accepted the fourth room which had a side sea view of the docks but at least we could see water.

Unfortunately things didn't improve. The bufffet breakfast and dinner were not up to 3 star standard never mind 5 star. The chef coudn't even be bothered to cook individual eggs / omlettes each morning but instead cooked in batches and put in a hot tray. The dinner was even worse - in my experience when in 5 star hotels, a featured dish would be in evidence being prepared by a chef for individuals but nothing like this was offered in Vuni Palace and if you didn't like lamb (which my husband doesn't) the other choices were even worse. Tea and coffee were only served at breakfast and with no kettles in the rooms it cost 7 lira for a cup of tea or coffee throughout the day.

Overall there was no Manager in evidence either in Reception or Maitre D in the Restaurant and this was very obvious from the attitude of all the staff who were definitely not happy at their work to the extent that they were unhelpful to guests and this created a very poor atmosphere which spoilt the holiday.

It offered no entertainment apart from a bingo game and quiz on 2 nights which was attending by 4 people each evening and the person who described the surrounding area as Beirut was correct as we tried walking at nightime looking for somewhere more friendly and the unlit streets were dangerous.

In it's favour it has a very nice plage overlooking the sea where we usually manged to get sunbeds.

In summary this is a 2/3 star hotel charing 5 star prices

Had a great time at this hotel. Travelled as part of a large group attending a wedding (wedding not at this hotel) and we all had an enjoyable time. The staff all were very friendly and on the morning after the wedding we overslept and missed breakfast. Needed to get my son something to eat and the staff were really helpful even when they had cleared everything away! One of the waiters laid a table with cloth and all the extras and went above and beyond by serving my son his cornflakes milk and sugar, when he could have just left it out for us to do ourselves!

The food was plentyful we stayed AI so was great as would be very pricey if not. Good selection of food as my Fiance is a very fussy eater and he always found plenty to eat. Breakfast - selection of cereals, eggs to order, breads and pastry counter, fresh fruit salads, cheeses and hot food selection which changed daily eg omlettes, sauasage fried hollumi cheese etc. Lunch which was held downstairs in the cafe area was great for kids, Pizza, chips, Fish, Burgers, various salads and pasta's also icecream bar. Dinners were served outside and with a selection of meats, pasta, rice, chips, salad too much to list but also huge selection of desserts too.

The hotel itself is lovely, great views, entertainment staff were great with the kids and spoke so many languages that all the kids felt included. They also had a mini funfair area for the kids too. Had great fun doing aqua arobics and the staff dont hastle you too much if you don't want to join in. The guys in our group had great fun playing water polo too. In the evening as we were in a large group we ended up making our own entertainment but could imagine that if you were staying for 2 weeks and relying on the hotel entertainment you may get a little bored however you can use the hotel nextdoor Oscars which was a bit more lively. Also you may want to plan trips out to the harbour which is beautiful with lots of bars and restaurants.

The hotel is not of 5 star UK standard, but your not in the UK! Does need attention to the bathroom areas, ours was clean but not the swankyiest of bathrooms. Had a problem with aircon towards the end of the stay as kept leaking and they could do with a mirror over the dressing table area. However the rooms were a good size with excellent sea views.

The hotel is off the beaten track as pictured but we all walked outside the hotel and no problem at all just a residential area with very friendly locals may look a bit run down but would not affect your holiday. Also the road and entrance to the hotel is fine and is as pictured in the photos that have been posted. To be honest bar the bathrooms the hotel was exactly as pictured on the Vuni Palace website.

On the whole had an excellent time at this hotel.
