A great setting if you can get near a window, a quick and efficient service with knowledgeable staff, and just a fantastic meal.
Hoku at 'Kamppi' offers an exceptional Japanese dining experience. The menu features delectable sushi, sashimi, and izakaya-style plates, all prepared with the utmost care and attention to detail. The service is attentive and the staff is knowledgeable about the cuisine. Whether you're a Japanese food enthusiast or simply looking to explore the rich Asian flavors, Hoku is a must-visit restaurant.
I´ve been coming here for several years and lately the restaurant has introduced some changes that turned the experience for the worse.
Misleading and dangerous menu items exposing guests to food allergens. When I arrived and were seated I informed the server that I have an allergy. He showed me that the "G" on the menu were all items made gluten-free and asked if I was OK with one ingredient. I said, no, as that ingredient (unless otherwise stated) is a wheat constituent. He seated me anyway and we proceed to order water and look over the menu.
When it came to ordering, we both ordered with a new server, who again asked if I was ok consuming one ingredient which contains wheat and therefore gluten. I said, no. Of course not, that has gluten in it. I was then informed that there actually was not anything on the menu that was gluten-free. I said, yes there is... you have marked them here "G" for gluten-free. They explained that those items were actually NOT gluten-free and contained an ingredient which has gluten in it. They offered to grill me some plain fish, but I was beyond shocked. How irresponsible to deliberately include a "G" label when you know you will put gluten in that dish.
And now for the kicker. I had the same exact experience 18 months ago. When I first arrived in Helsinki with my parents. At the time I made an official compliant and explained to the manager that this is misleading and incredibly dangerous. Similar to putting "NUT FREE" and then deliberately including nuts because "most people dont mind". Which means, HOKU has been informed about this before and not rectified the issue. I will go back in a month to see if this has been changed, and if not, I will be reporting the business to the government as a food safety violation and false advertising.
