Lay-out:

Housed in a former school with rooms over 4 floors, my standard Grandlit room on the second floor facing a road and opposite Navet (the swimming complex of fun) was pleasant, soothingly expansive with high ceilings and calm colours fortified by tasteful pops of colour, such as the artwork on the walls. Nice molecular lighting designs.

The royal purple velvet chair at the desk was quite good for writing and other desk work, although it is a shame the height of the chair cannot be adjusted. The desk was a nice size, but could benefit from having one small side of the desk from floor to desk with open shelving, and one-third of its length being an extra elevated surface above the desk.

A desk light was present which is good, since desk lights are vital to reading hard copy documents and helping with necessary light contrast. If the desk light and ceiling light had controllable task lighting, that would have been good. Something for the hotel to consider, since some older guests needing greater light contrast may find the ceiling light too dim, even when combined with bedside lamps and standing lamp.

Good storage options for clothing and other personal non-bathroom items. Comfortable bed (not too soft) with decent pillow choices in-room.

The description on the hotel website of proper ceiling height for their rooms is quite apt, because all hotel rooms should ideally have the ceiling height this hotel possesses. Entry level at the hotel is not the reception area, which is half a floor up via a lovely glass lift or a short flight of stairs. The stairs are comfortable to walk up or down. Reception seating area resembles a comforting stage. This is a somewhat arty hotel.

The bathroom was well-designed and cheery and ample or bright lighting depending on which switches you use, and nothing to complain about, except a hook for the hairdryer after usage would be nice. Hot water was quick.

For a solo traveler with one check-in suitcase, the room was suitable, although sufficient space for also using the in-room ironing board was a bit tricky. If you are traveling as two people and have more than one check-in suitcase, or with someone who may be specially-abled and needs more room to navigate, a Superior room category or bigger would be better. If you want a coffee machine or kettle for boiling tea, this room category does not have it.

Location:

Very central. Close to the other top 2 hotels in this city, the main bus platform for various buses to come and go, and not on the main street makes for relatively quiet pleasantness.

Depending on your room location, there may be the hum of buses, or vehicles for collecting recyclables (and those can be noisy when they are on the street this room faces, but very infrequent). The windows when completely shut do not block out all the sound, but at least 70%. Not noisy, most of the time.

Airport bus 80 has a stop outside the hotel. A taxi to or from the airport and the hotel will cost between 190 SEK to 200 SEK, depending on who you talk to in the taxi queue or if you pre-book.

Easy to explore the city center or wander around to relax by the beautiful Ume river, or go to museums such as the Bildmuseet (which currently has excellent exhibitions), or toddle to the main university for a visit (the walk down Kungsgatan takes approximately 20 minutes, and is nice to bicycle along).

Buffet breakfast:

Included in the room rate, it was always a bountiful well-stocked spread, and better than what I had in Stockholm at another hotel. Hummus was an unexpected delight, which I wish was more frequently available (but needs a label of whether it is vegan or not).

Softly scrambled eggs made with milk reminding me of childhood, bacon, sausages, baked beans, 2 types of marinated herring, many cold cuts, at least 5 different types of bread, 2 types of yoghurt with many available condiments such as chia seeds and hazelnuts and cereals, 9 types of tea, 3 types of juices, smoked salmon, jams, biscuits, cheeses, and assortment of fruit- Self-control and careful portioning was needed, otherwise it would be too easy to overeat. Especially the bowls of soft-boiled eggs, with Kalles kaviar. Non-hotel guests pay 195 SEK per person, to dine.

It would be better if the hotel breakfast has a bit more veggie options (such as self-making sandwiches with tunnbröd and 2 dips of hummus or babaganoush, or aglio olio spaghetti), for those who do not touch meat.

Any perils come from inconsiderate hotel guests, not the hotel or its hardworking breakfast staff.

Housekeeping:

Very warm and helpful, always with a cheery smile. Minor mishap of giving 2 shampoo bottles instead of 1 shower gel bottle and 1 shampoo bottle when my room was done, but easily exchanged. Asking for an extra roll of toilet paper was easy. One of the housekeeping staff thanked me for staying in the hotel, and said they hoped to see me again, with a cheery smile. Hotels need more housekeeping staff such as these.

The hotel restaurant Artonnittiosju:

It is where hotel guests eat breakfast and at dinner, has a smaller number of tables laid with glassware and cutlery. I had dinner here twice.

And it helps, if you know what to order or guess well. Some hits and misses. The rating for the restaurant at dinner is not included in this review.

Parking:

Very easily available in front of the hotel. Saw guests loading and unloading their own suitcases from their cars. Same thing with bicycles.

How this hotel promotes events is quite cool (see photo for example).

Did not try the sauna and gym. How is this hotel? I enjoyed it much more than the other hotel in Stockholm on this trip, even though this room is slightly smaller and not as cuttingly edgy, since this hotel's concept is quite different. Smooth early check-in, easy check-out.

Advice:

To give a professional personal touch which will be warmly remembered, have a system to send a politely warm welcome email within 24 hours of a guest booking a room in your hotel, possibly asking if the guest(s) have any queries or special needs to note. Replies to any guest email replies regarding welcome email should not exceed 3 days.

Not only would this simple inexpensive gesture give your hotel much better personalised impressions to guests than many other hotels in Sweden, welcome emails are what top-notch hotels would do (and I'm not referring to stars), as I have been privileged to experience.

Overall:

Did not get to try the heater in the room, but it was pleasantly cool enough for an August visit. Not the best hotel I've experienced, but one of the better hotels I've known, a good base for Umeå city, and definitely a pleasure to experience.

Stayed at this hotel for family wedding. Beautiful building, spacious corridors and rooms. Very attractive decor. Comfortable chairs, beds and pillows. Cleanliness super. Friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast amazing. One small pointer for excellence would be coffee/tea facility in individual rooms though this was readily available free of charge in the restaurant throughout our stay. Will remember this hotel as special and would recommend to anyone visiting Umea.

Nice looking, very good beds, very good breakfast (perhaps not very wide selection but perfect for me), quiet and in the walking distance from everything important in the city. What else you can ask from a hotel? Perhaps the outside of the hotel isn't so nice (as nice as the hotel itself) but what they can do?

One of the rooms our party got was pretty small (in the highest floor). That's perhaps something to avoid. Other rooms in the 2. and 3. floors were spacious.

For families with kids a bundle with nearby swimming centre is great.

We stayed for four nights with two adults and two children, and was met by professional staff that catered to our needs and wishes. The rooms were well cleaned and the beds were well made every day.

There isn't much to say about the hotel floors. The building is an old school, converted to a hotel, so the hallways are quite plain but well kept.

We never had dinner in the quite big and open hotel restaurant, but the breakfast was great. They offer a wide variety of breakfast options, from standard bacon and scrambled eggs, to nutritious cereal, juices, fruits and a good bread selection.
