“Superb villa with outstanding views”

We booked the 3 bedroom Villa Anemos Notos on the strength of the reviews on Tripadvisor and we were certainly very impressed. The villa is a few minutes drive up the hill from the lovely Elounda village centre (you definitely need a hire car as there are no pavements even if you wanted to walk into town) and only 5 minutes from the charming town of Agios Nikolaos. We were met at the airport and were in our hire car (also booked via George, who with his wife Despina owns the villa) in 5 minutes following the man who met us back to the villa, which was very useful in the dark at 11pm! The next day Despina's daughter, Joanna came over with a local map to tell us in her impeccable English where to find the local supermarkets and the best beaches and restaurants. A lovely lemon chicken dinner arrived for us that evening with regular traditional Cretan goodies turning up every few days, which was a lovely touch. There are 2 spacious double or twin bedrooms downstairs and a lovely double ensuite upstairs with a huge roof terrace. The views from the villa over the Mirabello Bay are just stunning and the aspect from the terrace over the pool and out over the Bay will be hard to beat anywhere in the world. There is a daily maid service, which gives your stay the feeling of being in a hotel, but with all your home comforts. Towels and sheets are changed every 3 days and inflatables provided for the pool. We spent a great day at Istron Bay Golden Beach and another lovely morning at Spinalonga Island and Plaka village for lunch. There are also several waterparks 45 minutes drive away. We ate well at Zygos in Agios Nikolaos and extremely well at The Ferryman, The Lotus Eaters and Despina's in Elounda village itself. The people are incredibly hospitable in this part of the world and Despina could not have been more charming or helpful during our stay. A superb villa in a beautiful part of Crete, run by absolutely charming people.

“The most amazing villas”

The villa we stayed in and the others on the estate were of the highest quality with spectacular views and outside space. Despina the owner was so hospitable and her Cretian chicken she made for our arrival was delicious and something the children talk about and ask to be cooked at home. Every other day she bought new treats and answered all our resort questions and directed us to the best local restaurants in Elounda town. This extra personal touch was really welcome and sets her apart from other villas we have stayed in. The only slight criticism we could give for this amazing villa stay was that we were unable to walk to any restaurants or beaches so having a car is absolutely necessary. However it is only a 5 min drive into town so really not an issue. Thanks Despina and George, I am certain we will be back again.

“Fantastic location, brilliant accomodation and great service.”
Reviewed 19 June 2014 for a stay in June 2014

I stayed in this lovely villa with 5 friends. Everything was lovely. The outside pool area is secluded and very well maintained and the villa is well maintained. The bedrooms are light, airy and spacious. The little extra touches of a cooked meal on the first evening and the little treats from Debbie during the week made our fantastic holiday even more special.

“Picture perfect and peaceful Cretan escape”
Reviewed 8 May 2014 for a stay in April 2014

Where do we start about Villa Anemos. A gem of a villa, perfect for a family/friends getaway, away from the hustle & bustle but within easy reach of Elounda town and the beautiful village of Plaka a few kilometres further by car. We wanted an escape, somewhere we could relax and do very little in beautiful surroundings and this villa didn't disappoint (we were all blown away by how lovely it was). We booked via Trip Advisor, and dealt directly with the owner George who was charming and more than helpful in advising on various arrangements including car hire (he also happens to own a car rental company) and local golf clubs. George also sent us some Crete guides and maps once we'd made our booking. We booked our car through George and this meant our arrival in Crete couldn't have been easier. There was a Driver waiting for us at the airport who we followed back to the villa (took about 50 mins). As we arrived at 11pm at night, this was extremely helpful. I suspect we'd have had fun finding the place had we been doing it alone with directions. As we arrived at the villa, we were greeted by George's wife, Despina, who had waited for us until after midnight and was very welcoming and friendly (she had prepared us a lovely home cooked meal of chicken, potatoes and Greek salad, absolutely delicious). Despina actually popped in a couple of times during our stay, bringing us homemade greek delicacies (stuffed vine leaves one afternoon and a delicious dessert on our final day). The villa was contemporary, clean and the facilities were almost faultless (I'd say the only exceptions were the sofa in the main villa which was pretty uncomfortable and the lack of entertainment. There was no CD player or ipod dock so we relied on our own speakers and phone to play music. It would also be worthwhile having a small selection of DVD's/music and perhaps a few games to keep the kids occupied when having a break from the sun. The views from both inside (especially the master bedroom upstairs) and outside are stunning. There's loads of outdoor space, beautiful landscaped gardens and a large grassed area perfect for ball games. The amount of outdoor space meant that with a group of 8 you never felt like you were on top of one another. The pool was not heated and as it was the beginning of the season and not baking hot, the water didn't warm up much during the day (Fine once you were in though!) Shouldn't imagine this is a problem in the peak months either. The pool is all the same depth, no shallow end so kids who can't swim need to be supervised (there are some ladder steps into the pool). 2 of the 4 bedrooms are in the guesthouse downstairs which is a separate apartment to the main villa, accessed through its own entrance (has its own kitchen, lounge and shower room). The guest house is lovely but as it's in the basement it's not particularly light (although saying that we only really went down to sleep and shower so this wasn't a problem). One thing to consider if you have young children in your party is that you would not want them sleeping in the guest house alone. This wasn't a problem for us as we had 3 adults and a child down there but it could be an issue. You really need at least one adult downstairs with the kids. The villa is down a short sloping drive away from the road so noise is not an issue, unless the sound of birds and cockerels offends you. We had a problem with the air conditioning in the master bedroom. Thankfully Despina popped in on our 2nd day and had someone out to sort it that afternoon. A cleaner comes 6 days a week, ensuring the villa is immaculate for the entire stay. There's also a guy who comes and cleans the pool early in the morning, who you may not see depending on what time you surface. You can walk into Elounda which takes around 20 minutes, be warned though, it's downhill into town but its very much uphill to get home. Most evenings we drove down for dinner, left the car and got a taxi back up (6 Euros) and would walk down and get the car next day. Some evenings we stayed at the villa and barbequed. There was a gas BBQ provided and the undercover seating area was perfect. There are excellent butchers and greengrocers in town where we were able to buy everything we needed. In fact, Elounda has everything you could need food wise. Small supermarket (called Discount Market I think), bakery for fresh bread and local sweet delicacies. Around the waterfront there are lots of tavernas/bars and we had good food and service wherever we went. There is a great bar in Elounda called Babell. Apart from showing the football which was a big plus for some of our party, it also had a lovely interior, great service and a decent cheese toasty! For kids there is a very nice public park by the beach in Elounda, this was a big hit and we visited a few times when down in town. The beach is lovely (slightly shingly) but more than suitable for kids to play and water shallow and clean. Plaka is definitely worth a visit, very pretty little village. Looks out to the island of Spinalonga and has some gorgeous shops and tavernas where you can eat and take in the view of the Island. Plaka is about 5km on from Elounda. Would say you definitely need a car if staying at Anemos Villas, particularly if you've got young kids as the walk to Elounda would be too much. Overall I'd say this was the perfect holiday destination for a quiet family break (it's not a beach holiday and is not for you if you want everything in short walking distance). We particularly wanted to be away from the hustle and bustle of a large complex/resort but have access to a town and facilities when we wanted them. If you have a car you can do as much or as little as you like. Would definitely recommend to groups of family/friends. In addition to Avra (4 bed) there is an additional 3 bed villa and a 2 bed villa so could be ideal for larger or smaller groups too. For families with toddler/s, I would think twice as there is no child's pool and quite a few steps so as parents of a toddler you are likely to be constantly on the move and you may not find this villa the most relaxing place to stay. If you are staying with young children, consider asking for a stair gate as the steps up to the master bedroom are tiled and steep and you wouldn't want a crawler trying to negotiate them alone!! It's not often we go back to the same place twice but we're definitely going back to Elounda and Anemos next year. Thanks George and Despina for a wonderful holiday experience, we hope to see you soon!!
