“Not what it says on the tin.”
Reviewed 5 September 2011

I spent 4 nights in AthenStyle Hostel. To be fair, the location is great, near the train station and all major sights. The street outside is a wee bit dodgy but its not the worst. Free internet on 3 pcs which was great. Breakfast was fine and did the job. Bar upstairs has a great view of the acropolis and the beer is cheap for Athens.
However, im gonna be here all night with all the compaints I have. I was in a dorm in the annexe building next door and clearly the main building is the nicer one to stay in. The annexe building is terribly shabby. The lobby and elevator are frightening.
I have to say too that the cleaner is clearly asleep at the wheel and should be sacked. Our dorm wasnt cleaned properly at all, the same piece of red string sat under my bunk from the time i arrived till when i left. ditto the dirty white socks on the balcony. the tiny bathroom had a bad smell, like it needs a proper, deep clean. the smell was of stale urine and drains. i smelled this before in a grimy hostel in Laos. the mirror in the loo hasnt been cleaned lately so it had loads of grubby splashes and unguents on it. urgh. so did the inside of the door. it turned my stomach, to be honest. there was stoor all along the ledge between the mirror and the sink. the loo was far too small, the sink was tiny and almost on top of the toilet and both are rammed up inside the door. you couldnt swing a cat in there and its just stupid really. the shower never, ever had hot water the whole time i was there even though the hostel advertises that it has 24 hour hot showers. a total lie. the water was beyond freezing. prepare for a miserable shower and to be heaving and gulping with fright and the cold. Also spotted two cockroaches on the peeling ceiling of the shower. Nice.....
reception staff were pretty unfriendly and know about as much about athens as paris hilton does. knew nothing about ferry times etc. useless. oh, and cheers for sending to our dorm two clearly ill guys who coughed and spluttered and snottered and gurgled and snored like pigs the whole night long, keeping the rest of us awake. i fully expect to be laid low with whatever germs they brought with them later this week. could be whooping cough or tuberculosis for all i know. on top of that, i might add that the bunk opposite mine creaked worse than on old barn door swinging on rusty hinges in an abandoned farm. everytime disease carrier number 1 shifted in his sickbed the damn thing creaked nonstop.
overall, not great. could be so much better.

Room Tip: Stay in dorms with the least number of beds. Dorms are overcrowded, dirty and noisy.

My husband and I stayed in AhenStyle four times during our trip to Greece. We used it as our base in Athens.
We booked double rooms. Two time we were upgraded to studios! The first one was comfortable had a single and a double beds, its own kitchenette, a bathroom and a safe. The second one had two double beds, the other conveniences and a wonderful balcony.
Once we actually got the room we had booked, and the other time we got bunk beds. The bunk beds were a surprise, but we didn't say anything as it was only one night.
Bathrooms are small but clean, with clean towels, but no soap. Bring your own!
. Beds are comfortable and rooms are very clean.
Breakfast was free, but we never chose it. The selection was basic, but good if you don't have much to spare.
Wifi is unstable, but the two computers in the basement worked just fine.
The staff is extremely friendly.
The rooftop terrace has a great viwe, and the location is superb! All turistic sites are within walking range.
I wouldn't recommend the dryer. Wr ended up hanging our laundry from our bunk beds...

Room Tip: It is worth booking a studio

Athens Style boasts a fabulous location, friendly staff and great facilities. On all accounts it is true to it word.

We stayed a number of nights, in a studio - two double beds. We had an awesome balcony, and bathroom facilities - except for the push button!

The lift is small, but adds a nice charm to the hostel.

The rooftop bar is a prize location. With stunning views over the city. Get up there for happy hour and catch the sunset.

The only bad thing would have to be the beer. On all 3 nights we ventured upstairs, the beer was flat and service slow. Honestly not worth the 3 euros - even during happy hour. A short walk towards the markets will find you immersed in fab bars with 1.5-2 euro pints and friendly service.

We only stayed here one night, but we will not be going back. We contacted the hostel before our stay to find out about transportation and were given very limited and incorrect information. When we arrived we waited about 20 minutes before we could check in. Once we did check in, we went to our private room. The room had a safe, air conditioning and tv. The bathroom was fine, but very small. The shower was so small that my husband could barely turn around in it. Wifi was only available in the lobby and when we went down to use it, it kept going in and out. Eventually we gave up. Like most hostels, it is pretty noisy at night. The hostel is about 45 minutes to an hour away from the airport. However, it is about a 5 minute walk to the agora. Overall we were pretty disappointed with this hostel and would not recommend it for your stay in Athens.

I spent three nights at this hostel and plan to return for two more.
First great thing about this hostel is the location, center of town, 3 min walk to metro station, next to a bunch of bars but without the noise.
The staff was very nice and international and made us feel at home while hanging out with us after their workings hours.

I stayed at the 8 bed dorm which was located in the building next door. Elevator was broken most of the time (we were on the forth floor) but it was ok. The room was like any dorm room, bunk beds with lights and outlet for each bed (useful for charging things) and lockers (being a lock from home). Showers slightly annoying with a 10 second push button for water.

Wifi in the lobby only but it was free and great.

One of the best things about this place is the bar on the roof which has amazing view and cheaper beer than in most bars around (go to happy hour between 8-9 to get 1+1 on beers)

All in all a good place with a fun young atmosphere with lots of students around.
