I spent 4 nights in AthenStyle Hostel. To be fair, the location is great, near the train station and all major sights. The street outside is a wee bit dodgy but its not the worst. Free internet on 3 pcs which was great. Breakfast was fine and did the job. Bar upstairs has a great view of the acropolis and the beer is cheap for Athens.
However, im gonna be here all night with all the compaints I have. I was in a dorm in the annexe building next door and clearly the main building is the nicer one to stay in. The annexe building is terribly shabby. The lobby and elevator are frightening.
I have to say too that the cleaner is clearly asleep at the wheel and should be sacked. Our dorm wasnt cleaned properly at all, the same piece of red string sat under my bunk from the time i arrived till when i left. ditto the dirty white socks on the balcony. the tiny bathroom had a bad smell, like it needs a proper, deep clean. the smell was of stale urine and drains. i smelled this before in a grimy hostel in Laos. the mirror in the loo hasnt been cleaned lately so it had loads of grubby splashes and unguents on it. urgh. so did the inside of the door. it turned my stomach, to be honest. there was stoor all along the ledge between the mirror and the sink. the loo was far too small, the sink was tiny and almost on top of the toilet and both are rammed up inside the door. you couldnt swing a cat in there and its just stupid really. the shower never, ever had hot water the whole time i was there even though the hostel advertises that it has 24 hour hot showers. a total lie. the water was beyond freezing. prepare for a miserable shower and to be heaving and gulping with fright and the cold. Also spotted two cockroaches on the peeling ceiling of the shower. Nice.....
reception staff were pretty unfriendly and know about as much about athens as paris hilton does. knew nothing about ferry times etc. useless. oh, and cheers for sending to our dorm two clearly ill guys who coughed and spluttered and snottered and gurgled and snored like pigs the whole night long, keeping the rest of us awake. i fully expect to be laid low with whatever germs they brought with them later this week. could be whooping cough or tuberculosis for all i know. on top of that, i might add that the bunk opposite mine creaked worse than on old barn door swinging on rusty hinges in an abandoned farm. everytime disease carrier number 1 shifted in his sickbed the damn thing creaked nonstop.
overall, not great. could be so much better.
