It is too easy to be critical of hotels visited but ultimately they are all trying hard!
Grande Hotel is old and trying to be modern, it is currently undergoing restoration.
It is a very good hotel helped by a great team of staff who will do anything to help you.
Rooms are small but kept spotless by the housekeeping team.
If on the second floor there is little water pressure so showers are difficult-but you can cope.
We spent 4 nights here-if at the front of the hotel the street although traffic free can be noisy-people enjoying themselves.
Restaurant is good-but menu a little brief, food OK-breakfast (Continental) good.
We would return!

Room tip: Try to get a room at the back to avoid the noisy revellers (unless you are one)

Really quaint hotel, with beautiful public rooms. Bedrooms were well maintained, clean and comfortable. Good buffet breakfast, which sets you up for the day. Ideal for the centre of the city, with a good selection of restaurants nearby. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Wifi is free and I personally found it worked fairly well. Overall a great stay.
Like Lisbon, Porto is very hilly, so it is a a pleasant walk down to the port and river areas and an invigorating one back. There are trams and a vehicular railway, and loads of great bars and cafes to stop and revitalise.

Staff were friendly, mature and helpful. The breakfast was great value served in very grand surroundings in the dining room and the bar area is cosy. Overall the hotel is clean and tidy but there is building work being carried out. Our room was very small, quite claustrophobic in fact, with an air conditioning unit that was not very effective. The free wi-fi was not secure and rather slow.

Just spent 3 nights in this Grand old hotel.
We booked a budget room , Yes we knew it would be small but wasn't bothered as we didn't intend to be in it only to sleep.
Really don't understand the comments on room size , if you book a budget room all the blurb states the rooms are small, if you want a larger room pay the difference and book a larger room.
However when we arrived to our surprise we were upgraded to a standard room which was huge, very comfortable and spotlessly clean !
Front desk staff very warm and welcoming , breakfast delicious, fresh fruit, juices, yogurts, lovely bread, pastries and hot food , scrambled eggs, bacon, beans, tea, coffee.
The beautiful sitting room and bar will transport you back to bye gone days , if only walls could talk !
We loved the atmosphere and ambience.
Porto itself is enchanting...we experienced a warm welcome everywhere we went, from street sellers, restaurant's thru to taxi drivers , everyone was happy to help.
This was a second visit to Porto , I have totally fallen in love with it ...
Things not to miss....6 bridge boat trip , wine cellar tour. Try Croft , last time I did Sandeman but closed due to building works all around. A must is the historic Tram, you can take it on 3 different routes...get your tickets from Tourist information and save , they have lots of combined offers.
Porto I love you ...I will be back . x

PS, Happy to answer any queries..

.

Room tip: Side rooms quieter than street facing.

A MUST place for lunch. A top quality fantastic value buffet each day. The lounges and the bar are excellent for business or meeting friends. The large elegant dining room is fin de siecle. Courteous respectful service. I did not stay there but ate at the lunch buffet several times. Evening is a la carte. Highly recommended.
