Didn't realise that this is close on 150 years old now but was aware it is a worldwide unique experience that really must be tried by any visitor to Madeira.

It is a 2km ride in a wicker two seater seat, pushed and pulled by two costumes drivers who know what they are about. Just let them do their job and try not to back seat drive things!

The ride is 30 Euros for a couple, and allow a tip at the bottom for the drivers (not sure what they really call themselves but I don't think 'mules' seems fair on them!

The ride is simply unique, very enjoyable and safe. It has a moderate thrill but safety is high and after more than a century I think we can assume they know what they are up to.

Half way down you get photographed and by the time you reach the bottom, conveniently by a shop, your photo is ready for you to buy (10 Euros), quite an impressive turnaround.

Very enjoyable and I simply don't think you can go to Funchal without making this trip.

So you climb into a basket on the ground and allow two guys to move it at speed and occasionally steer it .... great fun and has to be done [not a view shared by my wife]

This has to be one of the funniest and enjoyable activities I have had in my life! It’s fantastic and it’s the only place in the world that does it. It’s bedn happening for well over 100 years and I hope it continues for many many more years. It’s completely safe and is just so much fun!
A definite must do!

Sometimes cynicism about 'touristy' stuff just has to go out of the window, and this is one experience where I'm glad we did it.
Arrived on a cruise ship and declined all the organised trips, and the touts in the town, just strolled along the promenade to the Cable Car. Single tickets were €11 Euros for a pretty long ride with amazing views, up to Monte where we visited the church and had a drink at the café just below. The toboggan queue looked horrendously long but soon realised that it moves quickly once a truck load of toboggans arrives along with a bus load of drivers; our wait was only about 15 mins when there were at least 70 people in front of us, so don't be put off. €30 for two in a shallow basket on runners (there is a seat!), two drivers on the ropes and we were off!
Thankfully it's a oneway street downhill but there are parked cars (and in our case, roadworks) to negotiate, and even crossroads where a guy stops the approaching cars, and whilst it's fun it's no white knuckle ride so suitable for all. As anticipated, there's a request for a tip but no obligation; same with the photos. Our driver offered to take one of us at the start.
A drink in the sunshine on the café terrace - then we avoided the waiting taxis and headed along the road to the right towards the bus stop as recommended by other posters. Had just reached the bus stop when a taxi offered us €15 back to town, dearer than the bus but for 4 of us seemed worth it. Got a bit of history about the origin of the toboggans from the driver on the way down, and were dropped off outside the Market where we enjoyed a look round the fab displays of fish, fruit, veg, herbs&spices before enjoying another 'beverage' in the quaint Old Town with the painted doors and murals between here and the promenade.

It is not cheap but why not, you are only in Funchal once. It is one of those thing you want to have done when in Funchal. These rides was a convenient way for the rich people to get down to the city center back in the days so it was nice to have experienced it. What I can really recommend is once the ride is over, to walk the the last part of the hill down to the city center. The Toboggad sled ride takes you to two third of the way down, the last part you can walk or take a taxi. We walked straight down and it was a nice and easy walk along beautiful buildings and local houses.

By the way, once you are on the sled ride remember to smile for the guy running out on the street with a camera. I was not expecting that and thought it was a random tourist taking photos on us. The photo was so funny I had to buy it :)
