This hotel is is in a beautiful garden setting overlooking Funchal below. During our visit, we experienced delightful breezes and the temperature was probably 10 degrees cooler than Funchal.
Our superior room was 360 sq ft with two chairs, a desk and comfortable king bed. Our small balcony overlooked the front of the hotel with views of Funchal in the distance. The bathroom was large and included a separate toilet room. The “always on” heated towel rack was a nice touch and it came in handy for quickly drying washed clothes and bathing suits. The hotel runs a shuttle to Funchal, but space is limited to eight passengers, so it is important to sign up early. Food at the snack bar was good. Overall hotel service is good and the prices for extras (laundry, bar, snack bar) are reasonable for a hotel as nice as this property. Two minor disappointments were their unwillingness to open the fitness center before 9 a.m. and the wi-fi. While the wi-if worked on our balcony and by the pool, we had very poor connectivity in our room.

This hotel is an ideal holiday for those who require complete relaxation and recuperation or convalescence, it is reminiscent of a British house in India during the days of colonial rule. We stayed for one week in a twin room with garden balcony on a half board basis which proved very peaceful and provided an elegant, quiet and relaxing stay. The beds were comfortable and the room very clean and well maintained by the staff. The bathroom was perfectly adequate with quality products which were replenished frequently. The staff throughout the hotel were very attentive and provided excellent old fashioned service where nothing was too much trouble.

The half board was a five course set menu of a starter, soup, fish, meat, and a dessert which was different every evening. The quality of the food was excellent and well presented from a chef who has been there for decades. They also have a good selection of wines. The only downsides to the hotel is that once dinner is concluded you need to visit Funchal for entertainment after 10.00pm as the very good pianist ends his session each evening at that time. Taxi fares are about 6-8 Euros and the downhill walk is exactly 30 minutes at a steady pace - I would not recommend walking back especially late at night! The pool and pool area are very well looked after but the gym is rather dated as is the equipment - investment required in this area. Sadly the small pool bar was hardly used during the evening albeit that it is very nice with tables and chairs on the grass.

There are many good restaurants in Funchal to eat out and an extremely nice shopping area - try the Golden Gate restaurant for excellent cuisine and ambience at reasonable prices.

Madeira is a very affordable place with enormous investment since our first visit 15 years ago.

Room Tip: Rooms with balconies are best

Excellent hotel with perfect location, facing the ocean with beautiful gardens. The rooms are spacious with wide balcony. The food in the breakfast and also in dinner was excellent. the free shuttels to Funchal, the level of service and support. The beautiful outdoor swimming pool facing the ocean, the SPA area. Fully recommended.

A great find. Such a lovely hotel, the rooms and public areas are gorgeous as are the gardens. Pool area is spotless and all of the staff were fantastic. No complaints at all. There is loads of space to chill out and the three restaurants give a lot of choice. Breakfasts were lovely with a lot of choice again

This really is a beautiful hotel with clean, comfortable and decent sized rooms, wonderful grounds, amazing staff, lovely guests - it is all very civilised and is a great base for exploring Funchal. Think high class service with white linens, silverware and a beautiful grand piano. It is definitely somewhere I would visit again in my 60s... or 70s!
