We spent one night at Hotel do Carmo before heading up to the mountains. We could not have asked for a better start of our Madeira adventure - thank you to all the wonderful team.

The hotel is very centrally located within the city of Funchal yet is so quiet and idyllic. It has boutique feel with great amenities most personalised service.

We were staying in a standard room and had breakfast included and were greeted by the most welcoming gentleman and his team and glass of prosecco with their compliments!

We have received some of the best recommendations and were explained hotel facilities.

We haven’t dined at the hotel restaurant apart from the breakfast which had a great selection and was delicious.

We also made a use of the swimming pool located on the top floor which was perfect. Great water temperature, loungers and astonishing views across the island. We also came back in the evening to take some extra shots of the sunset!

Because everybody was so friendly it literally felt like staying at your own holiday house rather that the hotel.

We absolutely cannot wait to be back.

Conveniently located for the Marina and Old Town, this hotel is a little old fashioned, but they've turned that around by playing to it's 60s heritage and theming it.

The hotel is a few minutes walk to the centre, old town and marina, although it's in a more residential area it is very convenient.

The room was on the basic side, but clean and comfortable, with TV, fan, very good wifi and a brilliant mountain view (I think the rooms at the back, without balconies probably have a better view than some of the front with balconies).

The hotel as roof-top pool with fantastic views over the Marina and mountain and the upper sun deck was an ideal quiet place to sit and while away the hours looking at the amazing views.

The breakfast was your standard fayre with a wide selection of juices, meats, breads, cereals and fruit.

By far the best thing about this hotel was the multi-lingual staff who converse quite easily from what I could see in English, French and German, they were so welcoming and absolutely nothing was too much trouble for them.

Room tip: Get a room on the 4th or 5th floor

In need of a little TLC, but the staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. Our room was on the 3rd floor with a balcony, the views were a block of flats and a car park. I would not pay extra for a balcony again as they have a great sun terrace on top of the building. The bedroom was adequate as was the bathroom although a bit on the small side, but it was clean and the bed comfortable. Breakfast was very Continental, a bit skimpy on the hot food. The bar was comfortable and the drinks reasonably priced, all in all a 3 star hotel i would use again.

I stayed here last month with my Mum, we had a room with a balcony and even thou it looks over the road we used it all the time.
The room is a bit basic but was very clean and I had no complaints!
Breakfast is continental mainly which had a great selection of cold meats, cheese, breads and fresh fruit.
The rooftop pool offers fabulous views of the city, I didn't use the pool as it was still a bit chilly but its a good size for a fairly small central hotel.
The hotel is in a good location, only a 10 minute walk down to the cable cars and 10 minute walk the other way to where the cruise ships come in. Funchal really is a fabulous place to visit, so much to see and do and really lovely people.

Stayed here for a weeks holiday. Great welcome at reception with a glass of sparkling wine. The room was spotlessly clean and an equally clean bathroom and everything serviced fully every day. Breakfast buffet had everything you could want with hot food also. A smile every time from all the staff made nothing appear too much trouble. It's an ideal hotel to explore Funchal and Madeira via the various excursions. Would definitely use again.
