A fantastic Villa in a fantastic place. The pictures do not do this place justice. We spent 2 weeks here as a party of 9 and the villa was more than ample in size and amenities. The pool was a good size and the well stocked games room/ tv room is huge. Bedrooms are excellent as is the living space and kitchen, which had all you could need really. BBQ is a good addition also. The owner Gonçalo was very helpful during our stay and very approachable.
Funchal is a fabulous place to visit although be warned, it is extremely hilly. We would walk down to the main areas of the town each day as it is all downhill, and then return up to the villa by taxi. There are many excellent bars and restaurants all over so you are spoilt for choice.
All in all, we will certainly hope to go back again one day soon.
This is a fabulous villa; set in a residential area, among other similar, privately-owned villas on a secluded no-through road. The photographs show more clearly than I can describe just how beautiful it is. In the basement area there is every games facility any family could need, from toys and games for the young ones, to table tennis, pool table, gym equipment etc for the teenagers/adults, plus TV and games console. The swimming pool is big enough for a proper swim, and is salt water, rather than laden with chemicals. There is a fabulous, huge barbeque, and plenty of seating both inside and out. All the rooms are light, airy and - despite no air conditioning - cool. Set in a southerly-facing position, high above Funchal, the villa has lovely views, and cooling breezes. It is a little out of the way, and some taxi drivers had difficulty finding it, but the best advice is to direct them via the Maritimo stadium, and once there you can tell them where to turn. It costs between 8 and 10 Euros from Funchal. Walking down is not too bad and takes about 20 - 30 minutes, but if you don't hire a car, a taxi is pretty essential, as it is a very long, very steep climb back.
Near the Maritimo Stadium, which is about 10 minutes walk away, there are 2 restaurants and a small cafe, these are the nearest restaurants. There is a supermarket in Sao Martinho (uphill from the villa) or in Funchal, both are too far away to walk. We found it easier to walk to Pingo Doce in Funchal, do the shopping, and get one of the taxis (which park nearby) back, but if you have your own car the Sao Martinho one may be easier.
The villa is very private. we never saw any neighbours, but unfortunately we did hear their pets. the first couple of nights were peaceful, with only the distant noise of dogs and traffic which, because you are high up, and the town is in a sort of 'bowl' beneath, is almost like a natural amphitheatre, amplifying the sound at night, but it wasn't disruptive. However, after a few relatively peaceful nights, one evening the dog next door was put outside at about 8;00 pm, and it barked loudly and unceasingly until well after midnight, which set off the other dogs in the area (of which there are many). This happened again the next 2 nights, and we all had to wear earplugs in order to sleep. I told Goncalo of the problem, and helpful as always, he contacted the neighbour, and the situation did improve considerably, but did not disappear altogether.
Goncalo was an excellent host, always contactable, and helpful. He even drove us to a good restaurant for lunch, when our early flight meant we arrived at the villa before it was ready. He arranged our transfers from the airport to the villa, and it was both more comfortable, and cheaper than taking a taxi. On arrival, Goncalo had provided a bottle of water (although the water there is safe to drink), Bolo do Caco (local bread), ham and cheese. Bathroom and pool towels, tea towels, etc are provided too, so no need to bring these with you. At some rentals, washing powder, dishwashing tablets, soap, charcoal etc are provided, and you just replace what you use, but here an early visit to the supermarket is essential, as I think the cleaners must remove all remnants from the previous guests (or we were unlucky, and the previous guests took everything away with them!)
This is a fabulous place, with every amenity you could wish for. A car would be helpful, but not essential unless you have difficulty walking. There were only 4 of us, but there's plenty of room for larger parties. Apart from the dogs, it was peaceful, and a relaxing holiday.
Absolutely beautiful spacious house with stunning views in a quiet area it has everything you need including a BBQ and a lovely outdoor sitting area where my family and friends sat in the evenings. The bedrooms are spacious and clean with amazing views. The pool is perfect, swimming looking out to sea. Downstairs there is a huge games room with a TV. Opposite the Maritimo stadium which is about 10 minutes walk from the house there is a restaurant "a casa da sogra" and just 2 minutes to the left there is a restaurant/grill. Funchal centre is about 20 to 30 minutes slow walk down where there are an abundance of restaurants.
We’ve just spent a lot week here, and the pictures do not do it justice. The house is in a great position, and it’s so easy to walk down into town. This villa has so much to offer from the fantastic games room in the basement, to the outdoor bbq area and the pool overlooking the sea and Funchal. Gonçalo is so helpful and nothing a bother.
