We had only visited the hotel for breakfast, but the experience was beautiful - the building is an absolute gem with such a glorious feel to it! The food was fantastic, service impeccable and the outside area had a stunning view! A very special location that makes you want to come back and stay there forever!

Sure, the entrance is hard to find the first time, so I recommend you ask the hotel to arrange a private transfer. We did, it was 25 euros and worth every penny to be driven straight there and have our bags taken straight to our room. The hotel is just gorgeous. Its location is perfect - you can literally walk anywhere in Lisbon from it and the bars, restaurants and Fado bars are all around the area. We never walked more than ten minutes to find a perfect dinner. Their recommendations of Magda and her team for restaurants were excellent, they seemed to know precisely the sort of place we love. Breakfast very good. It was a special occasion for us and so we booked the "tower room" and it was HUGE, with stunning views over the river. Again quirky - a lovely mix of modern art pieces and old building. I clearly didn't read the website well enough though, or it wasn't mentioned, but I had expected that the 40 or so steps up to our room would have been the end of the climb. But to get to the outside seating area it was up yet another very tall, very steep, very narrow spiral staircase from within the room. And then to get to the sunbeds was yet another climb up another staircase. So, if you have a heart condition (like my husband) or don't want to climb four flights of stairs to access all your room amenities, book a lower floor! The building is beautiful, its outside terrace stunning, and yes we'd go back.

Room tip: Watch out for four flights of stairs in top suite.

The entrance to this lovely hotel dating back to 1909 is slightly tucked away from the main street and not easy vehicle access, but be assured that the effort to find it is worth while. It is in the Alfama district (Old Town) nearly opposite the cruise ship terminal.
As you step through the front door you see ornate floorings, stained glass and wrought iron light fittings.
There are only 6 suites and all are very different. We stayed in suite Lola. There was a Juliette balcony facing the river, and on the floor beneath us was a beautiful terrace shaded by Bougainvillea. It was not unusual to see people at the waterfront photographing this beautiful pink plant covering much of the frontage. The bathroom was very spacious with a large rain shower and separate bath. The room itself was very spacious, tea making facilities and a small free mini-bar were provided. The bedroom was very spacious but a criticism would be the storage space for clothes. There was just one large old wardrobe, the door didn’t easily stay open and it had limited shelving space. We were staying for a week and one of us kept our clothes mainly in the suitcase.
Breakfast is served in a delightful dining room with a lovely ornate cornice and gold painted gilding. If you are used to buffet style breakfast where you help yourself to fruit, yoghurt, cereal, breads and cheeses / cold meats be prepared for a slightly different system here. Some fresh fruit was brought in a cocktail size glass, a basket of bread / croissant supplied and pureed fruit to drink. A plate of ham and cheese was supplied along with a bowl of scrambled egg, coffee / tea was of course available.
Our main hosts were Philipa, Mariana and Patricia. All 3 were extremely helpful and willing to advise on trips, provide directions or make restaurant bookings as required.
Overall a great stay and worthy of 5*

Room tip: Best views are from suite Lola or the top floor

This hotel was the gem of a long trip filled with great hotels. The property is beautiful with a convenient location within the old part of the city. The staff was friendly, knowledgable and welcoming, making it feel like staying with friends in a gorgeous home. I cannot recommend this hotel enough.

We loved this gorgeous old palace, located in the Alfama district with a view of the water, and a garden balcony. The service was warm and welcoming, our room a fantastic mix of old and modern, and the breakfast was the best we had in Portugal. We wish we could have stayed for a month.
