Staying at Fortaleza do Guincho was the splurge of our trip to Portugal and, oh, it was worth it! We dined both at the Michelin starred restaurant and the bar and both were delicious. The tasting menu at the restaurant was amazing and good value given the quality and the wine list is good. Our room was comfortable with a lovely quiet, if small, spa bath and a little window overlooking the sea. A renovated 17th Century fort, the Fortaleza is beautifully refurbished, giving you a sense of the history of the place. Watching the sunset over the wild sea while sipping on a cocktail in the lounge was heaven!

My wife also reviewed this hotel and so the reviews will be similar and I will do a separate review for the restaurant.

Firstly, we bought a package that included dinner, bed and breakfast with bubbles and chocolates on arrival.

The initial greeting was excellent and then the disconnect started.

No bubbles and chocolates on arrival, though the receptionist who showed us to our room advised she would arrange it.

After an hour, I called reception, it’s on its way and sure enough, 5 minutes later it arrived. Went to open the bubbles.... no flutes, so I walked downstairs to the bar to get them, unfortunately they had been put away dirty, so they had to be cleaned first.

We chose to have a pre dinner drink in the nicest of the 3 lounges only to be advised it was closed for a private function. Actually our dinner reservation was before any guests arrived for the function, so they could have accommodated us.

Next nicest bar had no seats conducive to a pre dinner drink due to where & how other guests were seated which left us in the bar with the football on. Not ideal, but, hey...

Dinner was Michelin Star yet no one at front of house had advised the waiting staff of our meal offer in our package. They had to get a different menu and one could tell the waiter was embarrassed at the disconnect.

Breakfast: was adequate though nothing to get exited about. The pastries were rather nice.

The room we had was lovely, comfortable bed, small balcony and a functional bathroom with the shower in the bath, which for the quality of the hotel and price did detract.

What would have been nice is a small table on the balcony to put your drinks, rather than on the ground... there was room on the balcony railing to put your glass, but if knocked over would have gone to the public deck area below.

Overall we had an enjoyable stay, but some of the disconnects between departments offered a feeling of Fawlty Towers.

We tend to stay in a variety of places from moderate up to 5 star and our expectations, based on what we were paying, for Fortaleza were pretty high. We bought a ‘package’ for convenience .... accommodation, wine and chocolates on arrival and the tasting menu complete with wine match.

Check in was great, shown around the hotel and to our room. All positive. Room lovely, balcony with sea view. However, there did appear to be a disconnect between reception, bar and restaurant. We were told our wine would be delivered...we had to phone for it after an hour and then there were no flutes so we had to go in search of. Dinner, again, the restaurant had no info on what we had booked. I would have expected some notes next to our room number under which the booking was made.

When we went to have a pre dinner drink in the bar we were told the lounge area bar was off limits to guests due to a private booking. So we had the tv room bar complete with football. Not quite the ambience I was expecting.

Dinner review, excellent service, food As expected from such a restaurant, the soup was overly salty for my taste but it was replaced on comment. Wine match was equally good. Lots of lovely little touches and fabulous presentation.

Back to room.....no night light in bathroom at night and no window so either blinded by light or pitch black. Shower over bath. Air con wasn’t cold enough for my taste (and we had it on 16 cold) and like many hotels, duvet only, no top sheet so you can’t take a layer off when too hot. The other issue was the bathroom extractor kept going on randomly during the night!

On the positive side, breakfast was good and check out quick and easy. So, overall, good but not quite up to the standard I would expect for the cost.

We stayed a couple of nights at the hotel and were lucky to get the room with a pretty little balcony that opened mesmirizing view into the ocean and sunsets. The hotel is very nice and there are not too many rooms, initially being a fortress it was rebuilt into a hotel with style.
The room's bathroom facility however was rather old and does not correspond to the hotel's star level. Besides that very small sunbeds terrace, no pool and no easy access to the beach either. Both times when we came for breakfast we were not allowed to sit at any table by the window with the ocean view, since those were "reserved". No one has told us that the breakfast tables should/can be reserved so it didnt feel very nice that we could not just have breafast at any table we liked.
Tried to go to the hotel's bar once to have a drink and some snacks, waited for a long time and no one even came to take our order, so had to leave to another place.

All in all we had a nice stay and the room view was beatiful. The hotel services and facilitied did not correspond to a 5 star hotel from our point of view.

Dear guest Orangescent,

First of all we would like to thank you for your time and comment.

We are sorry that we were not able to fulfill all your expectations, please be sure that your comment will be taken in consideration in order to improve our services.

We are sorry not to be able to offer to our guest a pool or a SPA, but having a property built in a Fortress from the XVII and located in a natural park does have some advantage and some disadvantage; however in order to minimize it we do have an agreement with a local SPA, where our guest can go and enjoy it.

One last work to thank you for sharing your experience with the TripAdvisor community.

So just how good is the food here? Well is it worth flying to Lisbon just to stay and eat here, well may be not, but if you are in Lisbon should you detour out to here? Yes you absolutely should. The restaurant has one Michelin star but I think its pushing for two. Some restaurants put style and embellishment over taste but not here, yes it is fancy and yes there is some theatre but this is not done at the expense of the underlying taste but rather to enhance the experience.

The tasting menus are based around selections from the a la carte but are preceded by a whole range of taste teasers, all presented in a unique style. Even the butter selection is shaped as shells and painted!

I was very pleased that I had the chance to match the meal with the very rare Colares wine that is grown in the sand dunes north of here. Its not cheap but its almost unobtainable elsewhere. Colares is unique in Europe because the sand dunes are phylloxera resistant and therefore unlike everywhere else the vines are un-grafted.

Desert was accompanied by another relative rarity the fortified Carcavelos.

Expect it to be blowy but watching the wind driven surf pound the beaches is fine from inside the panoramic restaurant and it’s a great base for visiting Sintra.

Room tip: Courtyard rooms are a touch small and the fortress window makes them a bit claustrophobic, check out the rooms on the first floor
